Day 3

David Bowie -Let's Dance

One of my fave Bowie tracks which isn't short on references to music genres. Two for the price of one.

🎢 Let's dance
Put on your red shoes and dance the blues🎢

Soft secession. Blue states building parallel systems, withholding cooperation, and creating facts on the ground that render federal authority meaningless within their borders.

β€œWithout state cooperation, much of the federal government’s agenda becomes unenforceable.”
It’s Time for Americans to Start Talking About β€œSoft Secession”
Blue states are finally learning what red states have known all along: you don’t need federal permission to govern.

Absolutely. There is Bach in Eleanor Rigby and the whole language of music goes back to the Gregorian Chants. But, at some point stylistic cribbing and other lifting of sounds and sequences becomes parody. What’s the difference from an artist taking a whole recording with new lyrics and Weird Al?
Th at would be good place to start! Never has Grace Slick sounded so vapid
And 36 years ago is about when records started sounding like crap, maybe 40ish with the shift to digital recording. There are a ton of records from the 80’s that need a remaster ( ie both Firm albums)
I was thinking more Taylor Swift who would be better served, to my tastes, by hiring some musicians, sit face to face in a studio, and work out 10 songs and put it out. She could probably produce it by now. That’s not what she does. Also Jay Z can hire a drummer, there’s a ton of them
Maybe, but you haven’t seen my record collection, which spans from Scott Joplin to Wynton Marsalis (really Bach to the Claypool Lennon Delirium). I wasn’t really thinking hip hop since sampling is part of the genre.
Serendipity in the recording studio is dead. The band Yes’s whole sound was created because some engineer mixed in the bass line too loudly, by accident. 100 million albums sold later, a hit! The music isn’t bad, the desire to absolutely control the recording process is what kills it by
Too heavy reliance on sampling. If you want that famous James Brown break, hire a drummer to play it, he may put a twist on it. Too many songwriters per track, a dozen lyricists produces pablum
It’s not that it’s β€œbad”, it’s that the production is awful. Everything is brought too far forward so it sounds like a muddled mess, because of streaming. They don’t ever play with dynamics. They rarely record face to face in a studio. Protools etc irons out β€œimperfections” and therefore its soul.
A collapse of the Putin regime and the long overdue fragmentation of Russia would be helpful

They can take it, but they can’t hold it. Or, how many trillions did the U.S. spend on Afghanistan? Cheaper to bribe your way to regime change. Cheapest to just let them be and let it take care of it self
