Sepsis develops as a systemic severe response to an infection causing organ dysfunction and is associated with a high mortality rate and long-term sequelae among survivors. The lungs are among the organs more frequently affected, causing acute distress syndrome (ARDS).
By now, it would not surprise anyone to understand that there are host genetic variants governing severe infection outcomes.
