Honestly, beyond the first Strangers movie that came out 17 years ago (and is vastly overrated at that) has Bryan Bertino done anything even halfwatchable since then? A very good example of the phrase "style over substance." Despite the marketing's heavy push with Jordan Peele producing, its not even remotely close to Peel's work. Despite an absolutely incredible performance from Marlon Wayans, who carries the whole film on his shoulders, a lot of what goes on throughout the movie seems like a mish mash of different stylistic ideas thrown at the wall (ever wanted the Mortal Kombat X-ray move inserted in your movie?). A solid enough slow burn folk horror. A tad uneven at times, and could have used maybe 15 minutes trimmed off but the performances hold it together. Dev Patel is incredible as always, something I feel like I've said about everything I've seen him in since The Green Knight (still an underrated masterpiece). A fun movie with great performances from everyone, but still Nicholson absolutely shines and steals the show while chewing the scenery like it's a fatty steak. I can't believe this is somehow the first time I've actually sat down and watched it.

It's like Kevin Tenney thought, "hey, the first movie turned out alright and it's been 9 years since it came out. What if I mixed a Lifetime quality murder mystery idea with the original flick and see how that turns out." Certainly not the worst sequel I've ever seen, but just.... Oof.

Probably been over 20 years since I've revisited this one, but watching the new remake instigated a viewing. A solid flick that was different enough from its contemporaries to stand out even if the main selling point was it girl of the moment Tawny Kitaen as the lead. Not a lot of gore but enough to slide by in the day. Not great but certainly more than serviceable with enough fun moments to make it a decent little throwback comfort horror.

An overall harmless remake that has no business being as decent as it is. I'd put a lot of that on being directed by Chuck Russell, who has a solid track record in horror, having directed The Blob remake and Dream Warriors. A remake pretty much in name only with a few callbacks to the original, it's worth checking out if you're a fan of the original.
