I am an amateur birder and wildlife photographer, just enjoying sharing what I happen to stumble across. I use a Canon EOS R6 Mark 2 and currently my only lens is the Canon RF100-400mm IS USM and I often use a 1.4x extender on that. Still learning!

Snow Bunting. Wisconsin. 2025. Photo by me.

The snow bunting is a high arctic species that considers Wisconsin a nice balmy place to spend its winters. This was my first look at this amazing bird! #birdfacts 🪶

Haha, they are tricky! If I can't tell by size, I'll try and get a look at its beak. A Hairy's beak looks like what you'd expect from a woodpecker, long and robust. A Downy has a beak that's much smaller proportionally, looks almost like a songbird's beak!
Not a fast aperture at all, unfortunately! I use a Canon RF 100-400mm IS USM with a 1.4x extender. It's quite a slow set up, so I have to keep my shutter speed pretty slow. Means I get a lot blurry photos for every crisp one!
Downy Woodpecker. Wisconsin. 2025. Photo by me.

Yesterday I posted a Hairy Woodpecker, here's it's smaller cousin! Aside from size, the best way to tell these two apart is to look at the white tail feathers. Downies have black spots, Hairies don't. #birdfacts 🪶

We have both as well! Downies are smaller, but otherwise look so similar!
Hairy Woodpecker. Wisconsin. 2025. Photo by me.

These woodpeckers are year-long residents of Wisconsin. Their diet is primarily insects, but they'll readily come to bird feeders. They especially love suet! #birdfacts 🪶

Bald Eagle. Wisconsin. 2025. Photo by me.

I normally do wildlife portraits, but the sky was just so pretty as this bald eagle soared overhead. It was a 2nd year juvenile and didn't quite have the stereotypical white head and tail. #birds 🪶 #wildlifephotography #nature #animals
I love barred owls so much! Great shot!
White-breasted Nuthatch. Wisconsin. 2025. Photo by me.

These birds are frequent visitors of backyard bird feeders. They prefer large seeds like peanut and sunflower. In the winter, they especially love suet! #birdfacts 🪶

Sandhill Crane. Wisconsin. 2025. Photo by me.

The Sandhill crane has one of the oldest known fossils of any still-living bird! The oldest confirmed sandhill crane fossil is 2.5 million years old! #birdfacts 🪶

Beautiful lighting on this shot!
Eastern Chipmunk. Wisconsin. 2025. Photo by me.

Shaking it up with a non-bird photo! This little bugger was kind enough to freeze when it popped up and noticed me on a hike.

Red-bellied Woodpecker. Wisconsin. 2025 - photo by me.

This is a male! The females have a broken red cap, while the males have a continuous stripe from bill to nape. #birdfacts

Don't sleep on Mallards! They may be common, but their colors are beautiful.

This is my favorite shot from last weekend's trip to Lake Michigan. Herring gull. #birds #photography
Seems like the thing to do here is introduce yourself via animal photos so... Here's my old man:
