I just got a copy of THE LONELINESS OF SONIA AND SUNNY by Kiran Desai, which will be my treat to read once the grades are turned in. 📚

📕SPELL FREEDOM Elaine Weiss
📙A MARRIAGE AT SEA Sophie Elmhirst
📘GREAT CIRCLE Maggie Shipstead

And if the goal is to have young people build identities as readers, you could not come up with a *worse* means to that goal.

What structure that literate adults participate in around literacy and books does this emulate?

Why does everything have to be a zero-sum competition with winners and losers, let alone getting kids to read books and answer stupid trivia questions about them to feel bad about.

JUST READ BOOKS, THAT'S THE INCENTIVE!

This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of and I'm mad that my 11yo is excited about the prospect of being one of the top 7 kids who answer a 40 question test about a book to join the Battle of the Books team.

Kids can't just have a Book Club? They have to turn it into a competition?

Okay, this is a fascinating case of social media priming.

So, this creator, Sarah Velush, basically has a channel devoted to deadpan lifestyle humour (a la Chef Tova).

But because a progressive account takes it literally and says... this? Hundreds of comments assuming she's an evil tradwife.
I want this woman thrown in prison for at least a decade.

I have some great trusted friends that I have really good conversations with, but otherwise I think the overall level of conversation in the world has suffered with the lack of a true public square that so many were a part of. I mean, how do you even go about replacing that?

My previous network there was both smart and kind, and there were people in so many different domains with deep and helpful knowledge. It also was like a crystal ball in that I always felt like I was several months ahead of everyone because of that knowledge. It’s just gone.

The community that was built in that other place overtime was so deep and complex that it would take a similar amount of time to be able to re-create any of that here.

The moment and time is just so different too, so that many of us probably feel less able to speak openly in this kind of place.

I found this interview with a tech expert and investor very helpful. It rebuts the idea some AI in schools boosters push that genAI is just going to keep getting better.

@afreeparticle.com Thanks for the repost, that certainly will help more people see it.😁😊 I'm not ashamed to admit there are times I miss those follower numbers I had on Twitter, they did make me feel like I had a purpose in using them for good and helping others. I'm grateful for those years.

I agree, I'm struggling with this. After 2020, most of my group chats, especially around higher ed, fell apart. So that social connection is missing. I think the fracturing of the networks we created on Twitter has been a challenge.

I don't have an answer.

Research help yelp!

I'm looking for sources on how white culture privileges the written word/literacy as a mode of communication.

I keep getting back to Tema Okun's essay "White Supremacy Culture" and... not much else.

Who's got more? Or better search terms? Or anything?

I realize the irony of me asking this and possibly not getting any response at all, but I have to try.
Those of you that were like me and used the good days of Twitter to have meaningful conversations on there to answer questions, discuss opinions, develop thoughts. Where are you doing that now?+
