Election to choose the next President of Ireland (a largely ceremonial role) takes place on October 24.
I am not an active supporter of either of the two remaining candidates.
But I agree with these sentiments expressed by Catherine Connolly (current poll leader) today when asked about Trump/Gaza:

More from the U.S. bishops in 1994.
Are their 2025 counterparts listening?
Commitment and creativity at ALL levels of the Church - parishes, dioceses, national conference, universities, etc. - would definitely help to improve the plight of migrants.
And Pope Leo, like Pope Francis, would approve!

This 1994 statement by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops seems like a pretty good basis on which to summon all faithful Catholics to mobilise in opposition to the violence being visited on non-Trump-friendly cities by ICE and other federal agents.

REAL peace in Gaza and throughout the Middle East will only be possible when underlying causes of violence are addressed and eliminated - including the failure to establish a Palestinian State, with measures to ensure security for both Palestinians and Israelis.
The ongoing loss of life is tragic.

More 'sportswashing' (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sportsw...) by Saudi Arabia - distracting from human rights abuses.
Soccer, boxing, horse racing, Formula 1, golf, tennis ... all tainted.
Contemporaries of those below are in Saudi jails, some awaiting execution for opposing the regime. Shameful!

For the sake of everyone who has been suffering, news of any kind of ceasefire in Gaza is wonderful.
But talk of 'permanent peace' doesn't make sense if the same underlying issues remain. Colossal challenges remain. ☮️🕊️🙏

It is encouraging to see Pope Leo - like Pope Francis before him - urging U.S. bishops to stand more firmly with vulnerable immigrants against the Trump regime’s violence.
But it is also sad that such papal interventions are necessary. USCCB leadership is very deficient.

Video-letter from migrants addressed to Pope Leo and U.S. Catholics, shared with Pope Leo this morning.
He responded: “The Church cannot remain silent. You stand with me, and I stand with you”.
He also urged U.S. bishops to firmly address Trump’s mistreatment of immigrants.

“[P]astoral theology must not remain confined within an abstract dogmatic and moral theology and the general principles derived from these, but must reflect in the light of these principles on the historical and social situation in which the Church is living and must live here and now.”

Karl Rahner on the transition from a eurocentric to a genuinely global Church - visible for the very first time at Vatican Council II.
Pope Francis embodied this transition.
It continues with Pope Leo XIV.
