“Chang Geng? What are you doing on the floor?”

He didn’t move. The sight must’ve been quite comical, truly—a blotch of black ink on paper would probably be more presentable than he was at this present moment. He hadn’t even had the time to remove his dragon robes and emperor’s crown, and here he was, entirely depleted of his energy, so much so that his muscles refused to grant him the strength required to budge even a finger.

He had thought Gu Yun wouldn’t be coming back before noon; whenever he went out for patrol, he would always get a little distracted on the way back and stop by a tea house to get him the latest tea leaves that were all the rage in town, or would even secretly visit a tavern to have a few cups of osmanthus wine, thinking that he’d never hear a word of it. Sometimes, he would even come back with a couple trinkets, the same way he’d done it back when he was still an immature child. So he’d imagined he would have enough time to give his stiff limbs a rest before he’d come home.

Unfortunately for him, it seemed that Gu Yun had found his way back without delay, at the perfect time to find him face down on the floor of their guest room as he’d just come back from morning court. It was a little embarrassing to admit, but Chang Geng really couldn’t move. His knees had given out when he’d attempted to sit down on the wooden chair, and thus, the great Emperor Taishi had fallen on the floor in one of the most compromising positions he could be found in.

Defeated, he was forced to admit, “I can’t move.”

Then, he heard a sound—a snort, perhaps. He knew that Gu Yun was laughing at his expense despite trying his best not to. Who wouldn’t? The picture was simply too entertaining to be holding back. But he hadn’t foreseen that his beloved would lift him off the floor to carry him in his arms, though not without a bit of struggle.

“Your Majesty, please forgive my impudence, but you can’t continue to starfish on the floor mat like this. Allow me to carry you in a more comfortable place.”

Chang Geng was too stunned to speak. As he looked into his eyes in shock, he allowed himself to be carried back to bed with his arms helplessly holding onto Gu Yun’s neck, until he was gently placed upon its rough surface and that his head came into contact with two sturdy legs that were visibly used as a pillow for him to rest.

“Don’t overdo it, alright?” He’d heard him say, with a hand covering his eyes to shield him from external light. “You can rest on me for a while.”
