Reiner knew that he should be happy for them. Happy that they had found something real in the ruins he had left behind. And maybe he was, but as he lay there on the couch it was very difficult not to pay attention to the question that kept nagging at the back of his mind. Because if those two were that serious, where did that leave him? Reiner could feel the small, simmering hope that had lived in his chest since he reconnected with Jean, die a slow and painful death. It was like watching one of those wildlife documentaries where the crew didn’t interfere with nature as the little ember closed in on itself and perished. He let out a long sigh, letting the remaining soul of the hope escape into the empty air and closed his eyes. He supposed that the offer of friendship still stood, but would that be enough? He wasn’t sure, but his logical sense suggested that even if there was no romance in the future for him, Jean, and Bertholdt, it surely was better than anything Eren could give him.
