York and London Connections!

I'll be visiting York on the 14th/15th and London on 16th/17th Oct.

If you fancy grabbing a coffee over imagination, change, leadership, or anything else, do drop me a line!

Today, I had six hours free in London and woke up unsure what to do. I immediately start thinking about how to best use my time and make it count. And then I remembered some advice I shared with my team in my last role, courtesy of Maya Angelou...

Absolutely agree. Bringing play and fun, which can help with psychological safety, back into the workplace is probably far more important than is ever realised. Seriousness no doubt works against innovation.

Colleagues! I'll be in London tomorrow and Wednesday for a few meetings.

If anyone fancies a catch up or if you want to hear more about what I'm plotting with One Little Spark, let me know!

I’d love to know: do you see imagination as essential to your work. If not, why not? And if so, how do you ensure you create space for imaginative work?

I've started to explore this in my latest blog: kieranfenbyhulse.substack.com/p/one-little...
One Little Spark: Why Leadership Needs an Imagination Mindset
And how you can start developing an imagination mindset today.

We too often treat imagination as childish, or the domain of artists and dreamers (I've been watching Sandman on Netflix). But writing over a century ago, Deland reminds us that imagination has always been central to leadership, innovation, and change.

When I stumbled across Lorin F. Deland’s *Imagination in Business* (1909), I was really struck by how relevant his words are today:

“Imagination is as valuable in the management of trade as in any of the arts.”

I am so ready for the shades of autumn and layered clothing.

As the nights draw in and the kids return to school next week, I'm looking forward to focusing and firing up my imagination. 🎇

Expect thoughts on imagination next week and do check out my new website or drop me a line if you fancy a chat.

Given the timing and given the rare opportunity, I decided to spend as much of the summer with my two boys as possible. A joyful and also an intensely exhausting experience.

It's been quite a different summer! At the end of July, I left my role in academia after 20 years to focus on all the best bits and founded One Little Spark Training and Consultancy. Also sneaked in Birthday and became even more mid-life.

So, if you don't follow me on LinkedIn, you may be unaware that a few weeks ago I made the decision to leave academia and set up my own business.

And that becomes a reality today as I launch One Little Spark, a training and consultancy that puts imagination at the heart of work onelittlespark.uk

Dizzee Rascal to Michael Tippett was a bold and quite enjoyable transition on my shuffle this afternoon.

Thank you and thank you! LinkedIn has the weirdest and slowest algorithm.

Can't believe the five year old thinks he's going to beat my army when I have this line up...

And, in the messy and sometimes frenetic reality of research leadership, what elements are more easily found at the service, what elements require more dedicated and deep work, and what elements requires reimagine, reworking, and repairing in current times.

It's interesting to reflect through the lens of my current AD RKE and Director role and ask myself whether I'm doing all the things that the younger version of me anticipated and expected.

Flashback to my researcher developer days!

This popped up on one of my socials today from a two day course I co-led on Research Leadership with Paul Toombs almost ten years ago!
