Excellent look-back, Tom. When I interviewed Sitton for the Obs at the time, the great Jane Bown took the photos of him. Ever perceptive, she said later, “He’s a troubled man, vulnerable. Doesn’t know how to smile. Obviously feels very sorry for himself.”
Oddly, I felt sorry for him too.

US and Israeli officials say UK had nothing to do with the Gaza peace deal.

British officials insist they did - and point to similarities with the Good Friday Agreement as evidence.

Dorothy Thompson is worth a re-read then. She wrote passionately and often about the fascist threat - in Germany where she interviewed Hitler in 1931, and after the Bund gangsters threw her out of the press seats at their shocking rally at Madison Square Garden in 1939. Her message was: stay alert.

Trump has rambled on in a long, infantile rant of self-aggrandisement that would have shamed Mussolini and Hitler on their worst days. He has hijacked a day of peace. Never forget that, however he twisted Netanyahu’s arm to stop the genocide, Trump is a vile and dangerous hypocrite.

The other daft notion in this is… “thoughtful Conservatism”! Like, where was that for 14 years? This is the trouble with the commentariat - left, middle or right - they play on an old fiddle. It is a Westminster village thing. Get out of the bars, boys!
