A writer not a fighter… except in good causes. Sadly, despite noble resistance, the Observer (a very good cause) has now been thrown to the dogs of the marketplace by the Guardian, who proved to be, “an unreliable ally”.

“… suggests”. Probably the most overworked word in journalism. And it’s meaningless, by the way.

Not that rare. They once were close. Clearly Trump is being “transactional” again.

The Faroe Islands locker room was quite rightly hyped after the territory of just 55,000 people stunned the Czech Republic 2-1 🥳

It’s their third straight World Cup win, arguably the biggest in their history, and leaves the Faroes one point off a World Cup play-off spot. Truly remarkable 🇫🇴

In prison, Israeli guards told him again and again that Israeli soldiers had killed his entire family – a form of psychological torture, he said, meant to break him. But when he walked up the stairs of his Gaza home today, his wife rushed into his arms, his children and parents

Excellent look-back, Tom. When I interviewed Sitton for the Obs at the time, the great Jane Bown took the photos of him. Ever perceptive, she said later, “He’s a troubled man, vulnerable. Doesn’t know how to smile. Obviously feels very sorry for himself.”
Oddly, I felt sorry for him too.

It’s ill-making. Never have so many unworthy palms been greased in pursuit of a Nobel Peace Prize.

Trump’s America… while he’s off touting in the Middle East for a peace gong. Couldn’t make it up.

Yep. There are lot of undotted “Is” and uncrossed “Ts”, but the international media (John Simpson, MSNBC and al-Jazeera apart) seems to have lost its collective mind.

BBC News's John Simpson hitting the nail on the head:

"What this doesn't do in any way is sort out the Palestinian question"

"What it does is stop the agony that people in Gaza have been suffering for two years"

"But it doesn't create a future path for them"

"Maybe that can come"

She is poorly briefed, arrogantly dismissive of colleagues’ advice or… stupid. Any one of those three disqualifies her from public office beyond milk monitor.

I am enjoying Kemi Badenoch going 'who in government was saying China are not a threat?' - uh, you? Do you remember that 'Rishi Sunak is soft on China' was a huge fissure in the 2022 leadership elections and *BOTH* times you were on the 'dove' side?

Not entirely true. Witkoff gives serious props to Powell and the UK negotiators.

US and Israeli officials say UK had nothing to do with the Gaza peace deal.

British officials insist they did - and point to similarities with the Good Friday Agreement as evidence.

So who is right? My analysis here:

UK role in Gaza ceasefire agreement questioned by US figures
US ambassador to Israel calls Bridget Phillipson ‘delusional’ for saying UK played key role, though others point to important input from British figures

Dorothy Thompson is worth a re-read then. She wrote passionately and often about the fascist threat - in Germany where she interviewed Hitler in 1931, and after the Bund gangsters threw her out of the press seats at their shocking rally at Madison Square Garden in 1939. Her message was: stay alert.

Trump has made billions of dollars of blood money. Netanyahu has delayed his political downfall and prosecution for war crimes - but for all long?
This is an altogether transparently dirty story.

We have the Tories to thank for missing the AI boat. Labour doing well to catch up.

Trump has rambled on in a long, infantile rant of self-aggrandisement that would have shamed Mussolini and Hitler on their worst days. He has hijacked a day of peace. Never forget that, however he twisted Netanyahu’s arm to stop the genocide, Trump is a vile and dangerous hypocrite.

They twist in the wind like a dying bush. The irony is the longer they are in the news the more self-damage they do.

The other daft notion in this is… “thoughtful Conservatism”! Like, where was that for 14 years? This is the trouble with the commentariat - left, middle or right - they play on an old fiddle. It is a Westminster village thing. Get out of the bars, boys!
