Dispersed or backcountry camping is a different story. Most folks who camp that way are usually super respectful and mindful of space already - because they know how valuable that privacy is.

Wherever you camp, a little courtesy goes a long way. Let’s keep our public lands welcoming for everyone.

Just a quick note - when I talk about campsite etiquette, I’m mostly referring to developed campgrounds like state parks and NPS sites, where campsites are close together and clearly marked. In those spots, walking through someone’s site can feel pretty intrusive.

Friendly reminder: Walking through someone’s occupied campsite is considered rude. Even if it looks like a shortcut, that space is their space. Be neighborly and just go around.

Respecting each other’s space helps keep the campground peaceful, welcoming, and fun for everyone.

For me, this cross is a beacon of arrival at my happy place—the beach. Built by local Baxter “Bat” Correll after Hurricane Ike in 2008, it symbolizes hope &1 resilience. Swept out to sea in 2014, it was restored by the community. I love its current shell wreath.
