CO2 X warming treatment in a tide pool. Black boxes on the high ledge hold batteries & circuit boards, with tubes leading to heating elements in the pool. The smaller black box generates CO2, which bubbles into the pool.

Climate change threatens even the tough ones. Our new study shows that even Ascophyllum nodosum, a tough brown seaweed, struggles with rapid temperature swings during low tides, and populations across Europe vary in their heat tolerance.

A Trans-Tasman collaboration between IMAS & @aucklanduni.bsky.social researchers shows Longspined Sea Urchins are a huge threat to NE #NewZealand marine ecosystems. And as the region is at lower latitudes, the impact there could outstrip what we've seen in #Tasmania.

Parts of the Mediterranean Sea reached 30C this week, much earlier than usual, raising fears for marine life.

For some areas, this is 6 or 7C warmer than usual at this time of year.

More from @twernberg.bsky.social at #ITRS2025: We must to step up seriously if we want to stop and repair kelp loss. Is it even feasible? Daunting amount of restoration projects needed (maybe millions).
