Nashville's grammar cartoonist. When in doubt, trust Merriam-Webster. I like live music, baking cookies, and armadillos. And pretty much anything sparkly.

WOTD - Tennessee Tuesday, “safety first” edition. Nervous as a Cat in a Room Full of Rocking Chairs. These may be the worst cat and worst chairs I have ever drawn. Hold on to your tails and have a great Tuesday!
I'll go with Chris Whitley, "Livin' With the Law," please!
It's historically accurate. You're perfect.
WOTD “technical difficulties” edition. Impediment. If your Monday morning routine has been disrupted by the nationwide AWS outage, we raise our coffee cup to you in sympathy and solidarity.

MSNBC Grandmas in Skechers seamlessly reclaiming the frog from 4chan Nazis in about six weeks has gotta be the political upset of the century.
WOTD “readin’ and writin’” edition. Bibliomania. If you suffer from this condition, come sit by me. And hold me accountable - this massive “to be read” pile of mine isn’t gonna read itself.

*** Southern Festival of Books is this weekend!!! I hope to see some of you there!
WOTD “custom orders” edition. Tailor To vs. Cater To. Forget about sewing and cooking - we’re tackling a specific misusage today. I heard someone on the radio this morning talking about how a plan had been “catered to” a particular group. And, no. The plan was “tailored to” “cater to” those people.
WOTD “and another thing…..” edition. Expand vs. Expound. You can expand on a topic by broadening the conversation. You can expound on a topic by talking about it at length. If you’re adding to it or increasing its reach, you’re expanding, not expounding.
“I’m just gonna lie here for 5 more minutes,” our heroine thought to herself as she snuggled deeper under the covers. 90 minutes later…..
I would say if you have completed the Chicago marathon? Yeah, you're entitled to wear that thing all you want.
I mean, honestly, everything is better in Sticklandia.

(Also, I do have a Sticklandia "bible," so I can keep track of what is and isn't allowed. For example, there are no cows in Sticklandia.)
WOTD - Tennessee Tuesday. Fixin’ To. This Southernism has its roots in an older definition of “fix,” meaning “to prepare.” If you’re fixin’ to do something, it’s happening momentarily. Any second now. Here we go.
All of my numerical passwords and PINs are from land line phone numbers I have lived under that were held in other peoples' names. (This only gives something away if you are a former roommate of mine who remembers what our phone number was in 1990-whatever.)
If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Whoa. That is WILD. And doesn't bode well for my ride-sharing future, lol.

Also, OMG! You're the perfume Alyssa! You tried to help me find a replacement for my beloved Hermès Amazone years ago. I ended up with Jardin Sur Le Nil, and if they ever discontinue that one I will yeet myself into the sea.
This is also true for Uber drivers. They would rather have no review than anything other than 5 stars.
Whenever Waylon (silver tabby, 19yo) starts screaming for a bite of our dinner, we just look at him and go, "Dude, a real live chicken/cow/pig/[insert animal name here] would scare the s**t outta you."
Have you asked John L. at St. Ann's? His dad was a choral arranger too.

White people who have spent decades thinking “Born in the USA” is patriotic and “Every Breath You Take” is a great wedding song are suddenly very concerned about not being able to understand lyrics to some songs at the Super Bowl halftime show.
I was gonna add a note about judging the teachers gently if one encounters them in the wild!
WOTD “take a load off” edition. Respite. It’s Fall Break in Nashville this week, so those of us who haven’t decamped to the beach are enjoying a respite from the usual morning traffic. Have a great week, and remember to revel responsibly! Wear sunscreen, and don’t pet the sharks.
Trying to read them, but the website is not so much functioning right now?
WOTD “high crimes” edition. Pleaded vs. Pled. They’re both acceptable past tenses of “plead.” But for judicial purposes, “pleaded” is still preferred. For bonus points, one does not plead “innocent.” One pleads “not guilty.”
Lafayette and Demonbreun come to mind.
What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?
If it's followed by an E or an I, it's pronounced CH. And it doesn't matter if it's a single or double C. (I had always thought that CC was pronounced CH and C was pronounced K, and so I used to seriously mangle Erica Ciccarone's name....)
