But, regardless, this is extra painful, @taylorlorenz.bsky.social . But thanks for the good reporting (and @404media.co for their investigative work on this obvs.)

I've tried to pivot to more 'what can be done' (Policy! Policy! Policy!) than ever before. And I guess I sleep better at night hoping that I'm arming them with a framework that will be useful as things get worse.

One lecture revision that stands out is my lecture linking informational privacy and reproductive health privacy. That situation gets so much worse every term, I basically have to heap on piles of more recent examples every few months.
katypearce.bsky.social
It is so very very fucked up. Also, whenever I've been prepping lectures for teaching this term, I'm taking my lectures from JAN-FEB 2025 and having to revisit them, often having to take things that were theoretically possible and now discuss them as common.

Or I remember a few years ago when an undergrad told the class that they were in a car accident, and the other side's team found pix of her rock climbing on Instagram and used it against her. And the class was SHOCKED! Now when I use that example, students 🤷🏼 🤷🏾‍♂️ 🤷🏿 🤷🏼‍♀️ 🤷🏽‍♀️

Like stuff I used to bring up that was common place back then in my favorite authoritarian regimes, and was SHOCKING to North American/Western Euro audiences is now par for the course in the US.

This week was too emotional to listen to this. But I knew that I needed to.
If you put me in a time machine, back a decade, when I was actively researching this exact stuff in authoritarian regimes, if I thought I'd be listening to a podcast about this in the USA, I'd be 😕? youtu.be/2HUD9atKkUo?...

Do Vancouverites support the Blue Jays more than the Mariners?
katypearce.bsky.social
Lol. It is more like, we have access to the lottery, but the prices are OUTRAGEOUS. Is it ethical to engage with this evil org? Ugh.

Getting fifa tickets is extremely unpleasant.

I heard one song off the trainspotting soundtrack and went on a bender thinking... Did everyone else love this album as much as I did?

Basically every high school kid in Seattle walked out to protest down at the central district school office, protesting 2 lunches instead of 1. The district listened and stopped 2 lunches. These kids are so proud and so am I. (Also SPS has a civic engagement excused absence!)

Omg. BlueSky is methodone for millennial Twitter addicts, said @taylorlorenz.bsky.social on her podcast today.

I was just saying how glad I was that we didn't have smoke problems this August... Now...

Any suggestions for a more recent update that is VERY accessible, that is an umbrella review of studies related to social media and well-being? Basically a 2025 version of this: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
Again, VERY VERY VERY accessible.

Great video essay from @taylorlorenz.bsky.social on surveillance capitalism - posted in late July 2025, so up-to-date. Students will like this because the framing is "is your phone 'listening' to you?" Looks like this will be a series, which is great! www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VL1...

Apparently Claude likes you too. ;) (when I asked about assigning the podcast episode versus the Atlantic article and how they'd fit into the existing material)

Just a sticker. I ordered a plush derpy in June and it is still back ordered.
