Every tournament provides information about what Eleanor needs to work on at #fencing practice. Emily and I review bouts and watch videos for inspiration about what to teach next. We talk about fencing a lot in our #family, so that helps with brainstorming.
I search for gourmet food destinations near fencing venues. After a long hot day involving multiple uniform changes, raspberry chocolate ice cream is a delicious cool treat. My family walks aisles filled with colorful displays and tries samples before making our final choices.
I plan fencing trips around food. I look for hotel amenities, reviews, and proximity to the venue and supermarkets. Eleanor is still learning how to compete, so I limit the events she enters. She swims, plays games with friends, and explores the surrounding area. The goal is for her to have fun.
One week ago, Emily and my husband went undefeated in first-round pools at a regional tournament. Eleanor also fenced extremely well. I coached both foil and épée events, helping kids who used to take classes with my family. Every minute is tightly scheduled at fencing tournaments.

The breaststroke is powered by a kick that requires strength and flexibility in the hips, knees, and ankles. The motion is similar to an exercise that Maestro Mark Masters teaches fencers to open up their hips. Hip and knee injuries are common among female fencers – I monitor Eleanor for pain.
Maestro Mark Masters coaches my daughters in foil and épée. His most famous students are Olympic gold medalist Maia Weintrub and men's épée world champion Graham Wicas. Whenever possible, I take Eleanor to work with Mark in Philadelphia. He advises me on what to teach next in fencing and swimming.
Emily introduced Eleanor to mango sago bowls after moving into her college dormitory. Mango and tapioca pudding are excellent recovery foods for athletes. Potassium helps restore electrolytes while easily digested carbohydrates provide calories to build muscle.

Regulation of muscle potassium: exercise performance, fatigue and health implications - European Journal of Applied Physiology
This review integrates from the single muscle fibre to exercising human the current understanding of the role of skeletal muscle for whole-body potassium (K+) regulation, and specifically the regulation of skeletal muscle [K+]. We describe the K+ transport proteins in skeletal muscle and how they contribute to, or modulate, K+ disturbances during exercise. Muscle and plasma K+ balance are markedly altered during and after high-intensity dynamic exercise (including sports), static contractions and ischaemia, which have implications for skeletal and cardiac muscle contractile performance. Moderate elevations of plasma and interstitial [K+] during exercise have beneficial effects on multiple physiological systems. Severe reductions of the trans-sarcolemmal K+ gradient likely contributes to muscle and whole-body fatigue, i.e. impaired exercise performance. Chronic or acute changes of arterial plasma [K+] (hyperkalaemia or hypokalaemia) have dangerous health implications for cardiac function. The current mechanisms to explain how raised extracellular [K+] impairs cardiac and skeletal muscle function are discussed, along with the latest cell physiology research explaining how calcium, β-adrenergic agonists, insulin or glucose act as clinical treatments for hyperkalaemia to protect the heart and skeletal muscle in vivo. Finally, whether these agents can also modulate K+-induced muscle fatigue are evaluated.

Bananas, chocolate chips, and cocoa powder are nutrient-dense ingredients that hold permanent positions on my grocery list. Eleanor and I bake energy cake that stores well in the fridge and freezer. I have been experimenting for decades to find a recipe using leftover fruit in delicious baked goods.
I keep my Ironman Triathlon watch attached to my handbag so I can be ready to teach at all times. I keep track of fencing and swimming practices plus wear the watch under a leather glove when I give lessons. I own multiple sets of leather fencing coach gear that I keep permanently ready to share.
I give private lessons to Eleanor and Josh that are tailored to fit what happens when they fence. It is difficult for me to switch between teaching foil and épée since many of the rules are the opposite. Eleanor is winning almost all of her bouts in practice, so our training regimen is working.
This summer, Eleanor competed in events that she does not like to help her team in the league swimming championships. Clubs that offer everything motivate kids to push themselves into uncomfortable areas. When they see people with a wide variety of skills, it opens up a path of possibilities.
Professional strip coaching was not common when I was fencing competitively. The conventional wisdom was that kids would figure out what to do. Some did, some didn't. My focus is on long-term development and fifteen touch bouts. I set attainable goals and remind the kids a day before each event.
Seven years ago, I purchased multiple sets of world cup fencing gear. My daughters and I wore those uniforms during the COVID-19 pandemic as I learned how to become a fencing coach. FIE gear lasts for a very long time – I plan to use outgrown uniforms to teach friends how to fence.
My family gives chocolate as gifts. We consume a variety of traditional and experimental flavors as desserts at home and during travel. When brands go global, different companies own regional licensing rights. Resulting limited flavors strengthen the original brand since they create new audiences.

Do Trade Restrictions Work? Lessons From Trade With Japan in the 1980s | Econofact
The U.S. imposed a wide range of trade restrictions on Japan in the 1980s. But the bilateral trade deficit remained high and declined with the Great Recession.

My three children have started buying holiday gifts for each other. International shipping companies have ceased deliveries to the United States due to tariffs. During the 1980s trade wars, I became an expert at sewing in order to create and alter clothing. My kids all own miniature sewing kits.
There are two types of programs available for children: developmental and accelerated. The best sports clubs are the ones that have both options available for all ages. I work with certified coaches with advanced degrees in related subjects to learn what my kids need while reading recommended books.
