Some days I wonder why I’m still trying to write this book. Then I see this:
“You’re not doing it wrong. You’re just in the part that makes most people quit.”

So I’m staying. Writing. Even when it feels impossible.

Everyone in This Room Will Someday Be Dead
Halfway through. Not sure I love it, but I can’t stop reading it.
Gilda’s intrusive thoughts hit close.

“An intrusive thought about Eli driving off a bridge ebbs into my mind’s eye…”

I used to think it was just me. Maybe not.

My birthday’s June 23.
This year my gifts are books.

Not for me, but for my immigrant ESL students: for readers who deserve to feel seen.

Wishlist full of immigrant stories here:

Please share with a friend who knows books can change lives. 💛

Finished Our Missing Hearts in pajamas, under the sky.

Still thinking about this line:
“So it doesn’t matter, he says, as long as it’s happening to somebody else.”

Ng’s PACT felt fictional; until now.
In 2025, her warning feels like a headline.

So, I’m not going to say anything.
I’m just going to leave this here, for you.
To sit with.
To think about.

Books & Breakfast at school today, pastries, good convo, and I left with Little Fires Everywhere from the TOLO table.

Won Good Dirt in the raffle! 💛

Some days just feel like a hug.

Just signed with Harvard’s DKP to build civics curriculum for English Learners across MA.

Only 4 teachers statewide—one of them is me. 🙋🏽‍♀️

Newcomers, emerging, developing—all getting lessons that work.

Are you happy? I am. 💛

What do Americanah, Behold the Dreamers, True Biz, and Our Missing Hearts have in common… with Not Guilty?
A lot, it turns out.

A passage from Our Missing Hearts stopped me this week. Margaret discovers a voice inside her she didn’t know she had.

I’m still discovering mine, too.
Quietly. Slowly.
In Portuguese first.
Always in Portuguese first.

📚 Submission Update:

Four rejections.
Two full requests.
A whole lot of hope.

That’s where I am with Not Guilty today.

Some emails sting. Some spark. But all of them mean the story is out there, being read, being considered. That’s something.

Onward. ✨

“They don’t teach you any of this. Too unpatriotic…”

I grew up under dictatorship.
Now I teach, to make sure my students know what I wasn’t allowed to.

Some writing rules weren’t made for writers like me.
Immigrant. Multilingual.
Teaching full-time.
Writing in English and Portuguese.
These are five I had to unlearn while writing Not Guilty.

Went to a powerful panel at MATSOL on building culturally responsive ELD classrooms using Brazilian and Latin collectivist values. Connected with Dr. Sonia Ruiz—a Brazilian like me—and left so inspired. Feels like the start of something meaningful… maybe a cross-school collaboration? 💛

Finally met Andrea Honigsfeld—what a full-circle moment! Her co-teaching books have shaped my work for years. Today’s panel on centering MLs was inspiring. Left with books, ideas, and joy for the Harvard DKP work ahead. 💙

Still in awe—came to MATSOL as a teacher, ended up sharing Not Guilty with a bookstore owner (family biz since 1972!) who asked for the full manuscript + wants to connect me with publishers. Not a book conference, but hey—connections are connections. 💛

Traveling for MATSOL—excited to be here, but today was tough. Hard to leave my students on the Island. Not a good day to be an immigrant… scary times.
Another Not Guilty rejection, but I’m learning from each one.
Keep me posted, and I’ll send ESL updates!

Wrote Not Guilty with no desk—just my lap, a bed, a borrowed room.
This weekend, I finally made a space of my own with rescued furniture and zero dollars.
Still messy, but it’s mine.
And that’s something.

Just finished True Biz—a fierce, brilliant book that insists we listen. Deafness isn’t broken. It’s culture, language, identity. Next up: Our Missing Hearts. My reading list is diverse for a reason. Want recs? I’m your person.

Nantucket reds. Lilly Pulitzer. Fog in the morning, gold in the dunes by afternoon, the bluff cliffs.
Sirens wasn’t filmed here, but they mention Sconset.
They dress like Easter eggs, summer’s old money.
Feels like Nantucket. Just not my Nantucket.
