My empathy to those with pets, sensory over-stimulation, the need to work or concentrate, or anyone with any trauma related to bombers zipping over and over their homes at low altitude.
It’s that time of year where Chicago indulges its lust & fetish for vulgar, warmongering hardware, resulting in insane noise pollution that will haunt the city soundscape. Maybe this year they’ll have a montage dedicated to the resurgence of facism that’s also been creeping into our everyday lives.
I got to know Lajuana Lampkins during BLM. North Ave was boarded up, and I’d become fascinated with Prince Akbar. A shy voice called out, “that’s my son’s…” we spoke for 45 mins; her sons, their art, her poetry, and grief - this, most poignant as her son had died at the hands of law enforcement. RIP
Sunday is a good day, I think I’ll do it twice. I spent my first Sunday wandering Tokyo, later catching flight, shutting my eyes on Sunday night. I opened my eyes Sunday morning, in LA -a Japanese donut, espresso & book in hand - next 24 hours sorted.

Yoshi has been at his barbershop for 16 years. Yoshi is a gem, proud father of 2 kids and 4 grandkids. We listened to a ball game, talked about visits to the US, and Japan. Today, my last, I stopped by to wish him well. He wished us safe travels, and gave me a big hug.

Fucha Ryori Bon, Tokyo

“FUCHA” means “drinking tea together with all people”, the word is also used to mean a meal that begins and ends with tea, creating friendship and peace among those eating together. 12 courses, including tea ceremonies, soup, and a veritable feast of vegetables.
Sabouru is a kissaten (Japanese coffee shop) with walls decorated with scribbled poetic musings since 1955.

“サボる” (saboru) means “to slack off”, but we hardly wasted any time. We enjoyed our coffee and thick toast, then got back to wandering around the city of books.

Jazz Big Boy is a cozy jazz café in Tokyo, renowned for its 3000+ records. Hayashi-san has been spinning records since the 90’s. Everything is focused on creating an intimate experience. We deep listened, simply reveling in silence with our fellow listeners.

Since I first read Satoshi Yagisawa's Days at the Morisaki Bookshop, I’ve wanted to visit Jimbocho in Tokyo. An entire city of used bookshops, we spent the morning wandering and browsing. At the Book Hotel, rooms and floors are Dewey Decimal themed.

Sam Nordquist 🏳️‍⚧️

When you systemically remove people from law, legal protection, and simple acknowledgment, you steal their personhood.

Sam Norquist deserved to be seen, protected, and valued. This is a reminder of the consequences of society’s refusal to recognize humanity and marginalized people.

This one is special. Utah was a folkie, or hobo, who rode the rails, singing and telling stories all across the US. Ani took his stories and songs, sole voice and guitars, and added her own spin. Utah Phillips was a remarkable man, and a compelling story teller. I hope you enjoy!
