Interesting discussions in #mathstoday - can a cone be classified as a pyramid? Led on from discussing whether a cylinder is a prism.
I was called a mean teacher twice today. So upset to be thought of as average 🤣🤣🤣
Played the shape game for reviewing straight line work with my S3s. The class seemed to enjoy the competitiveness of the activity and it let me see the areas of straight line that still need some work #mathsrockedtoday #iteachmaths #ukmathschat
Today I sent a few emails to parents saying how well their child was getting on this term. It was great to send positive messages and I got some replies from the parents who really appreciated the email. I must do more of this.
I've been trying to do that this term (at the end of week 4 now). It's a good way to focus on the good parts of teaching as we often get dragged down by the negatives. I've been using #mathsrockedtoday but happy to join in with other # too.
That's a good idea. I did actually think of including a sketch but then forgot.
S3s finding the equation of a line between two points. The main errors arose when calculating the gradient. A review of negative numbers is in order. #mathsrockedtoday #ukmathschat #iteachmaths
They really are a great way to get lots of practice. I need to use them more than I do.
S3s worked on calculating gradient between two points then tried this from open middle. It was interesting to see the different ways they tackled it #mathsrockedtoday #ukmathschat #iteachmaths
Highlight of the day - watching the adventures of slope dude with my S3 class. It never fails to amuse. #mathsrockedtoday #ukmathschat #iteachmaths
Continuing work on averages with S2s. Many trying this worksheet from Don Steward while some continued with calculations. So pleased with the reasoning skills they showed. #mathsrockedtoday #ukmathschat #iteachmaths
S3 class exploring straight lines using Desmos. Many were noticing connections between the equations and the graphs, although some were more interested in making the strangest graphs they could 😌 #mathsrockedtoday #ukmathschat #iteachmaths
A couple of decision-making tasks were completed today. Advanced Higher choosing the correct method for partial fractions and Apps recognising the differences between percentages questions. #mathsrockedtoday #ukmathschat #iteachmaths
S3s completed their mini statistics projects involving standard deviation, boxplots, and other graphs. #mathsrockedtoday #ukmathschat #iteachmaths
A little place value task to start the lesson today. It led to some great questions. Whether it is acceptable to start a number with 0, is 0 is odd, or even, is 0 a square number and can negative numbers be even. #mathsrockedtoday #ukmathschat
Lovely little game to get pupils thinking about probability and fairness. Great discussion followed #mathsrockedtoday #ukmathschat
I would love to get back to the positive side of social media and enjoy more collaboration. From next week, when classes start back I am going to try to share something from my lessons each day. There were lots of previous hastags used but i quite liked #mathsrockedtoday feel free to join in 😀
One of the first things that got me started on Twitter was #math180. Sharing something from your classroom every day. It was a great way to interact with other maths teachers and learn from each other.
In recent years, sharing has become less common and often met with harsh criticism.
