Probably earlier even. McCarthyism started in 1947. Feels like some are still living in that state of paranoia 30+ years since the fall of the USSR.

Unfortunately many won't but we can still hope that they lose the majority and enough break ranks under pressure to do what is right: Impeach and remove!

I see some members from a certain minority group that are doing what a certain officer from a certain majority group did to members of their minority group for which many of us marched against.

Can't even get Air Traffic Controllers paid, so maybe in 4 years we'll visit again.

Any suggestions that aren't London or Manchester?

Even more ridiculous, but not surprising, is that this has 11k likes and 3k reposts.

Statehood would make this even worse for Puerto Ricans who stay in the island. The island is turning only affordable for retirees or crypto magnates who are searching for a federal tax haven.
juliben.bsky.social
Because of the Jones Act, Puerto Rico also must use US-built and crewed vessels for shipments, raising transport costs compared to nearby islands. This contributes to higher prices and lower purchasing power, worsening the island’s economic disadvantage (Average income is about half of mainland US).

Odd seeing outrage over Argentina’s $20B bailout when US & UK financing has shaped Latin America for over half a century. Chile’s dictatorship and later right-wing governments have enjoyed steady US-backed funding and market access for 40+ years, far exceeding $20B, under the banner of "stability".
juliben.bsky.social
Right, the people upset now about the administration bailing out Israel and Argentina with their taxpayer dollars should know that their taxpayer dollars were used to finance murderous right wing dictatorships in Latin America in the 70s and 80s (and beyond in Chile).

I lived in Argentina for 4 years. I learned to love the people and some aspects of the culture. I traveled around the country and met people from various regions. I have only seen this stereotype of superiority prevalent in Buenos Aires which is 1/4 of the country's total population.
juliben.bsky.social
Agreed. I've been so out of touch and I just read of the case of Enzo Fernandez and learned of an infamous song. All elements are racist and homophobic in nature. They probably thought they weren't doing anything wrong but trying to touch a nerve. It sadly reflects the ignorance of Argentine society

If you look at other countries, racist chants in football are far too common in Europe and South America. In Spain I remember Brazilian players being called monkeys. In Italy, teams like Lazio are well known as fascist. The UK is no exception. Football is a tainted sport led by a corrupt Federation.
juliben.bsky.social
Nevertheless, this is why I stopped following football altogether. It brings the worst out of people, myself included. At one point I saw myself chanting against people of countries like Bolivia and Paraguay and that is not who I want to be nor who I want my son to see me as. So I stopped.

This ignores the fact that most players were born in France and Netherlands. However, I do remember hearing that Dutch players were as much or worse asses and that the French already were boasting about being champions prior to the game. All the other games went on without issues.
juliben.bsky.social
Not to justify but there is a misguided notion in all of South America and parts of Europe that French and Dutch players of African and Caribbean descent were brought in and nationalized to gain a competitive advantage. While many are probably racists, most were chanting against the FFF.

Taking a break from my usual posts to share some happier thoughts. Just planted 18 new native perennials and shrubs with my (almost) 3 year old who loves making the Earth beautiful with his dad.

This included 3 that are a threatened species in PA. Here's to hoping that they all thrive!

I'm sorry to hear that and I hope that it doesn't come to that here in the US. Unfortunately it does not look promising. We shall persevere.

Hope that you have a good night and that you learn to be more tolerant. It's not a good luck to spew hate and then act like you're left-leaning or a liberal. It's kinda hypocritical actually.

Hipólito Yrigoyen and Arturo Illia were two promising Presidents who promoted economic and social development. They both were sacked by a military coup. Perón was involved in the coup that ousted Yrigoyen, led to the infamous decade, and then stole the credit from many of Yrigoyen's policies.
