58 seconds of relaxation with the nearby Pōhutukawa. Sun’s out but there is also a gentle rain. You can hear the cicadas, the Tūī, and other birds.

Supporting the critically endangered kākāpō through donations/adoptions has become a matter very close to my heart since 2019. 💚

I'm very happy to welcome JEM as my 6th adopted bird, and I hope you don't mind me dedicating her to you, Mr @jemaineclement.bsky.social

Great to be on Whenua Hou last week, helping attach GPS tags to #kakapo ahead of the breeding season. We caught up with Rakiura - whom we're hoping will use the same nest for the 7th time. That's unusual - kākāpō normally don't re-use nests. #conservation #parrots

We've got access to webcams around the country that help us monitor the weather. And sometimes we get visitors! 🐦‍⬛
With one pic every four minutes, it's not easy to catch birds in flight, but we got a lucky shot today 📸

Looking for a different gift idea this year? How about a #kakapo adoption? Adoptions are open again until 25th Nov, with postage or email options. These fund a significant proportion of our programme and make a real difference to the #conservation work we do. Thanks! www.doc.govt.nz/our-work/kak...
Adopt a kākāpō
Kākāpō adoptions are a special way to support the conservation of this taonga species. You can adopt a kākāpō for yourself or as a gift.

After the tragic loss of kākāpō Solstice, it was time for a new adoption: Marama. 💚🥰

...already planning to adopt a sixth one soon.

In this first look, we get an insight into the complex stop-motion technique behind Laika's Wildwood, a film I'm looking fwd to very much. The animators' skills are extremely impressive, and the realistic movements of the wings are breathtaking. 🦅

Something like this hasn't happened since 1935: a high-end, sub-900mb CAT 5 Tropical Cyclone made landfall at/near peak intensity in the Atlantic Basin. The October 28, 2025 Hurricane Melissa Jamaica landfall event is a rare meteorological moment in history.

We're not feeding #kakapo on Anchor Island this year: with a big rimu mast predicted, we're expecting them not to need help. It's also part of our plan to reduce management intensity. #conservation #parrots

#kakapo breeding starts with the feeding. For the last month we've been putting out food on Whenua Hou to get the adults into breeding condition. We need the males fat enough to boom and the females heavy enough to produce eggs (although not too hefty or their chicks will all be males). #parrots

Our inbox has been filled with images of glowing clouds in the early morning sky.

These clouds are exhaust gases from a rocket launched from the Mahia Peninsula.

As the gases are high in the atmosphere, they are illuminated by the rising sun giving them their glowing quality.

Sad to report that we've lost another #kakapo, and a particularly significant one. Solstice was the last kākāpō rediscovered, found on Rakiura in 1997. She died on the weekend as a result of complications from the #disease cloacitis. There are now 237 kākāpō left. #conservation #parrots #birds

The loss of my adopted kākāpō Solstice, which has reduced the population of this critically endangered species to 237 birds, and now the loss of Jane Goodall, whose wisdom and words of warning will stay with us for a long time, have made me very thoughtful and sad today.
