Oh cool, thank you. I am still Bluesky rookie 😀
Sorry if I came off to "dictatorial." I don't believe in "badwrongfun", but I do go back to my experience over the years, but which is after all, kind of narrowly personal. I appreciate your thoughtful responses!
This might sound like the same thing but I think it's different at the table: The point is to MAKE **fun** stories (TOGETHER).

Telling is a a solo thing... we are all making together.

And if you've heard D&D stories.. they ain't usually compelling if you weren't there :) JUST MAKE THEM FUN!
I haven't done much besides a little messing around with NBA, but White Lies looks pretty flexible and intuitive. Built on OSR type engine and very fast and easy to run and teach. You probably have to bring the flavor and fine-tune it to your sub-genre.
Good for you and good luck. As you say below... open communication at the table solves 99% of things. Sounds like a great table and you folks will always find ways to have fun.

As a GM I used to internalize more. When I stopped doing that, so much more fun at the table. Trust the table.
I hope in my F20/D&Dish campaigns that characters still want huge gobs of loot to accomplish bigger character goals like founding their own church, building their castle, raising their armies, etc. But I tend to play more old-school games where you're not getting a new shiny each time you level.
The first two books are awesome-- super indispensable for new patrons, which DCC judges always need!
Spellburn tonight! 9PM ET / 8PM CT on Youtube @Goodmangames

We'll do GENCON 2025 wrap-up with the co-host of RAW, Matt "Grapeape" Robertson!

Plus some crowdburning, some emails and the usual gamefoolery!

The players should be nervous. they better bring their A-Game and their best dice!
I love crit and crit fails.. I guess in GUMSHOE, you can just count 1 as a fumble, 6 as a crit... if you want to have a bigger spread, you could make them roll again on either and treat another 1 or 6 as a true fumble/crit?
Cthulhu dark is good... but what I am suggesting above is that the GUMSHOE character sheet IS all you need PLUS -investigative skills: spend points to learn stuff. General skills: D6 with 4 as your target to do challenging stuff. Now you have the rules. That's literally all you need.
I can't really imagine it being much easier than the basic GUMSHOE engine. You can pretty much just run things off the character sheets, and slightly up the mildest crunch for chase rules, stability tests, etc. But the basics of GUMSHOE are very very light.

Thanks for the thorough and thoughtful review!
Also, your background can be as simple (?) as you are a 0-level cobbler, probably with a goofy name, with a 16 Stamina and a 4 Personality. Oh and you wake up in a world with a green sky and a T-Rex lunging at you. GO!
Hey all, I'm running three games for Summer Knights Online, a charity convention at the end of July.

1) The Ball at Edgecombe Manner gothic horror RPG "Nightmares of Otranto"
2) The Black Drop - Trail of Cthulhu
3) DCC -- Emirikol Was Framed!

If you want to branch out to weird and wild stuff, try DCC RPG. It has enough rules to keep you honest and grounded, but the spell results and can really blow your minds at the table. Often implemented in a semi-freeform way, but if you want to do rules as written, they are there.
