I fed 24 huskies through Finnish winters to compete. Now I build infrastructure so champions don’t need viral fame to eat.

Outcome-based sponsorship, verified performance, merit over followers.

Perhaps a brief introduction is in place. I did not expect to get 1000 followers in two weeks! So plenty of new friends.

I’m a dad, founder, bit of a nomad, drawn to niche sports, techie, alley cat feeder, former musher, and an adventurer. Well, used to be, anyway!

I got told today that writing fact checked sports media articles sponsored by, for example, a coach or parent of an athlete, is “fake news”.

But news sponsored by betting agencies or big pharma is fully legit.

Yeah. I’ll happily die on this hill.

It’s going to be interesting to see which “unlimited growth opportunity” Meta will next attach to.

These digital empires are weird.

They don’t run on business logic, but imaginary future business logic.
Sources: Meta plans deep budget cuts to its metaverse efforts in 2026, potentially as high as 30% and most likely including layoffs as early as January (Kurt Wagner/Bloomberg)

Most common mistake leaders in emerging or niche sports make is assuming they can model their business partnerships along mass media sports.

Very few sports have masses of spectators. Most sports have practitioners as audiences. Fewer individuals, but more valuable per capita.

Some of you may know I used to have a lot of huskies. I raced with them, even worked tourism gigs with them occasionally.

I have just one left.

Introducing Ritu. She just turned 14 years old. She’s a veteran of many races, as well as beauty contests.

She’s turning into a cat, enjoys the sun ☀️

Buffer just turned 15 years old! And we're fortunate to be closing out our best year in the past 7. We have 69,000 customers, a $23M annual run rate, and will achieve over $2M in profit in 2025.

To mark 15 years of Buffer, here are 15 of the key lessons I've leaned first hand as a founder CEO:

Hey Emma! @cyclartist.bsky.social

We previously developed a tool for sponsor to evaluate athlete Instagram accounts, and recently decided we want to make this information available for all.

I'm collecting feedback, would you mind giving it a go? It's a free utility.

We created scoring system for athlete Instagram accounts for sponsors analytics. But I figured there's no point keeping this stuff secret.

So I turned it into a free analytics tool for all athletes:

I’d rather see both initiatives pass: compulsory civic duty for all, and significantly more aggressive taxation of wealth, instead of cutting education & health services.

Then, if the Swiss can do it, how about all of Europe?
Swiss to vote on compulsory civic duty for all: Voters will also be weighing in on whether to slap new taxes on the super-rich to help finance the country's effort against climate change

If you don’t know how problematic the streaming music business is, read this.

The financial model seems convoluted to the point where I find it almost impossible to not suppose it’s unethical.

Basically: “the superstars get also the indies’ paycheck, but we made it too complex to prove it.”

Gift shop insight: when buyer ≠ recipient, show recipient testimonials, not buyer reviews. The purchase itself authenticates value—buyer reviews are redundant.

Frame benefits as "you give them something of value" not "you'll feel good." Their satisfaction proves your outcome.

Maybe you know an athlete, a real competing athlete, someone maybe in a sport that doesn’t quite make it to local news.

An emerging champion.

Maybe give them a gift of recognition?

She’s growing up, spending more time with friends, out & about.

Today we agreed on a new emergency protocol:

Going from idea to execution in digital services has never been faster.

Unfortunately this doesn’t necessarily mean faster time to get the results you want.

Making rabbit holes easier to enter doesn’t make jumping into one is a better idea.

What I'm building is obviosly impossible and probably stupid. Here's why I'm doing it.

What I'm Building is Clearly Impossible
Building a new category starts with an obvious question: if it's such a fantastic opportunity, why hasn't anyone done it? The answer is simple: because it's clearly impossible.

“Learning to say No was critical for his success.”

That’s probably true. But also taken out of context it conveys the wrong message unless you’re operating at capacity.

If you have time for Netflix and games, you’re not.

Say “yes” to every opportunity until you are.

Quick test: is that really a strategy?

Turn the statement around. If the opposite sounds ludicrous, it’s not a strategy — it’s a table stake.

“Our strategy is to deliver great customer service.”

Flip it: “Our strategy is to deliver terrible customer service.”

If you are an early stage startup, just don’t do any paid ads, period.

It’s screws up your insights, and will lead you astray. And the more unique your idea is, the most pronounced this effect will be.

Don’t pay for exposure until you’ve got real traction and you know where from.

What does it mean to “build a category” in the startup context?

If you have direct competition, and you know customers who do business with them, you’re not building a category.

Building a category starts with trying to figure out if the market exists.

It’s not “ship it” hustle.

A question: are you using more or less ChatGPT (or alike) than 6 months ago?

While I continue to use it in development work, in other areas my use has been declining rapidly and for the first time since its launch I don’t have a paid subscription anymore.

Is it just me?
