“There is no room in Augustine’s concept of authority for one who is self-seeking and in search of power over others,” Leo XIV wrote in his doctoral dissertation.

Another reason that business success is irrelevant to success in public office.

Trump now defies the Supreme Court. Only Congress can stop him. Find the Republicans in Congress who have the courage to speak out. Write them. I tell them (truthfully) that I'm an independent on the left who supports - with $ - those who choose country over party.

Havel: "the line between good and evil runs through each person". Totalitarianism succeeds by making everyone complicit.

Fascism comes disguised as patriotism, as tradition, as protection.

American academic purges began long before McCarthy.

As I wrote last week, punishing universities in the name of protecting Jews will instead endanger them. Prof Jason Stanley, a Jew and historian of fascism, puts it more strongly: The president is setting Jews up, presenting them as an excuse for taking down democracy. www.npr.org/2025/04/01/n...

The Supreme Court is making decisions I find deeply unwelcome - e.g., its decision about presidential immunity.

But the legal theory that lies beneath has a respectable history and needs to be answered, not just dismissed in contempt.

So here goes! 15 minutes. Dig in.

It was bound to happen. One result of Trump’s actions is good, and important. Europe is sheddingits dependence on the US. The world, and we, will be better off with a third superpower. Especially because the new addition shares our values.

Then, for occasional hope. Today's Editorial Board says Trump can't defy court orders. Another op-ed defends Voice of America against DOGE.

When I lived briefly in S. Korea, I noticed that when people handed things to me, they used both hands. A gesture of respect toward anyone older.

Today a Vietnamese tailor handed me my trimmed clothing with both hands. "Is your custom was the same?" Yes. A lovely custom.
