When Luke was in prison, he volunteered for a experiment to shorten his sentence. The experiment was an attempt to recreate the Super Soldier Serum but an accident would cause him to get superhuman abilities that included his impervious skin

Real name Dr. Ted Sallis, he was part of a group working on a project to create soldiers that could survive biological warfare. Ted then combined it with the Serum, he would also inject himself after an assassination attempt but would crash into the swamp and turn into Man Thing

He was one of 300 black soldiers to be tested on with an experimental version of the Super Soldier Serum after the secrets of the original version were lost after Erskine’s assassination. Isiah would be one of 7 to survive and eventually the last one to survive
