usually it feels disingenuous to mainly talk about a work in comparison to other ones but with stray children it's like, so baked into the dna that it pulls from other games that to NOT do so is more of a disservice. the most intentional "hey remember this thing?" of all time

obvious interpretation of the kiki's delivery service older is embodying nostalgia for childhood works & the movie's theme, a transition to adulthood (reinforced by the dirty bra, symbol of puberty). however i want to believe it's pointed at adults that flatten ghibli's works into pure "vibes" lmao

first example off the top of my head to emphasize "it's not just metafiction" is the saga series. this shit is all about giving the player complete control in ways nothing but a video game could pull off and it fucks severely
i don't even mean meta 4th wall breaks kind of awareness, just games that are made with consideration that there's someone holding a controller. this could be in the mechanics, in the visuals, w/e. it's about the myriad of ways devs keep this interactivity in mind, if only just in "press a to jump"

i dunno, at the end of the day whether they're intentionally trying to be profound or not i just can't get enough of games that're aware they're games. a game that could just as easily be made in a different medium and lose nothing does nothing for me

tbh i think my ability to enjoy rpgs that have Things To Say about the genre would be significantly diminished if i wasn't such a huge dragon quest fan lol. like it really is the integral piece to most commentary being made in this specific vein

playing stray children hot off the heels of nier replicant has me feeling Things about some of the ways games interrogate the medium. sc's narrative is reality filtered through layers of abstraction & absurdity while nier replicant gives you a straightforward story through a heavy meta framework
