Thanks. Initially, it was going to be something far more sinister, but it took on a life of its own as I wrote it. Have you read any George Saunders? His collection, "Civilwarland in Bad Decline," uses amusement parks as settings for several short stories to good effect.

Figured out what the story will be about:
Many folktales record marriages between mermaids (who might assume human form) and men. In most, the man steals the mermaid’s cap or belt, her comb or mirror. While the objects are hidden she lives with him; if she finds them she returns at once to the sea.

Got an email this morning from a magazine that I always submit to (and always get rejected by) saying the story made it to their final selection round and would be voted on for inclusion in their next issue. I had to withdraw it, but still, that's the closet I've gotten to being published by them.

Thanks. Like most of my shorter fiction, it was originally written for Apex Magazine's monthly flash fiction contest. They give a one-word prompt that your story needs to incorporate. I haven't won that one yet, but it's a fun exercise. This month's prompt is "folklore." I'm leaning towards a golem.

Thanks. It's my favorite of what I've written lately and feels like a vindication. One of the rejections I received mentioned that there wasn't any conflict in the story, which is why it didn't engage the editor. That was done on purpose. I wanted to write a quiet story about loss
