Well, this is quite an issue. A CD of unheard John & Yoko. An exclusive, substantial new Springsteen interview. Prince, Miles, Lucinda Williams, Hendrix, Replacements, Brigitte Fontaine, Congos, Mavis Staples. Such good, diverse writing. Such rich design. It's a classic @mojomagazine.bsky.social 1/2

D’Angelo. Hard to even process this one. He was one of a kind, but part of a continuum. That’s at the heart of what made him so special. #RIP

I used to think public mourning for celebs you never met was an unnecessary or odd use of social media, but now I think the collective part of it is one of its more redeemable uses.

Was always pretty sure that D'Angelo live in Brixton on the Voodoo tour was the best gig I'd ever seen. But then I saw him again.

People who spend their professional lives writing often make better books than memoirists who don't.

The MOJO review makes a bunch of not dissimilar points while also asserting that it's also pretty great by most measures.

Arguably reads like a 3. But it's also an example of how tricky it can be to review archive releases and reissues: are you reviewing what it was, what it isn't or what it is? This one very much focuses on what it isn't.

And reader, that guy was Kid Rock (but yes 100% and I think your “I don’t care” is critical because there’s no *correct* way to like an album; you get there however works for you).

I read this exact passage out loud to everyone in the room when I got to it.

Moving thru Shadow Ticket slowly (this is only pg. 9) but here's one of my favorite bits so far, Pynchon beautifully rendering light (shades of Against the Day) with "penumbras of lampposts" & then almost a Last Picture Show vibe with Skeet Wheeler (relative of Zoyd?!) & his Milwaukee bildungsroman.

I often think about the value of that listening discipline to try and like a new record I paid for. I've been lucky enough to avoid doing it for 35 years, but maybe there was something about all those desperate repeat plays that was useful? About learning how records can slowly reveal themselves?

Lots of egregious things this govt are doing right now, and this maybe isn't the most pressing. But withdrawing funding for the IB in state schools is a petty, low-level, stealth xenophobic way of further isolating the UK from the international community and it stinks. www.change.org/p/oppose-the...
