Working in an SEMH special school, Evertonian.
This is a pretty blunt analysis. There is a vast difference in the needs and support for pupils with sensory/physical needs compared to SEMH or cognition and learning. Lumping all special schools together and trying to evaluate academic achievement isn’t particularly useful.

I’ve been thinking about this over the past few days. There is lots of hard thinking needed to improve SEND practice as Simon has outlined here. I think another big challenge is that what ‘success’ looks like from one pupil to the next can be very different. 1/7

Agree with everything in this thread. Another issue is researchers often swerve working with the children who would most benefit from research studies. As someone who works in an SEMH special school…
One issue though is that it is very hard to get research studies of specialist interventions funded. This is particularly the case for those which are on the boundary of health & education (such as occupational or speech & language therapy).

It was an absolute joy to hear children at @springwellleeds.bsky.social practicing for their Christmas concert tomorrow.
Some things in schools can’t be quantifiably measured but have a massive impact on creating a sense of community and shared purpose.

A really useful thread. We think about these things a lot on our SEMH setting.
Teaching pupils with #ACEs can raise a lot of questions and reflection on how best to ensure retention of knowledge when cognitive behaviour can otherwise make this difficult.

In my time, predominantly influenced by @katejonesteach.bsky.social I've discovered a few things seem to work well.

I couldn’t even face a gradual migration here from X so I’ve just deleted the X app. It was most liberating!
