On the 14th December, we celebrate Jodrell Bank’s 80th anniversary by sharing our final #JodrellAt80 heritage photo – taking us back to where it all began.

This black and white photo is one of the first ever taken at Jodrell, back when the site was still the @manchester.ac.uk botany station. [🧵1/4]

Today’s heritage photo, taken in December 1963, shows two men discussing the control desk for the Mark II (being built in the background). On the right is J.G. Davies, who would be instrumental in tracking the Luna 9 mission, and on the left is a Senior Experimental Officer.

📸 Today’s #JodrellAt80 throwback photo comes from inside the Polarisation Hut, where Roger Jennison and Mrinal Das Gupta (pictured here in 1951) pioneered early experiments in long-baseline interferometry!

The hut is now the control room for the 21-foot telescope used in undergraduate experiments.

To celebrate our 80th anniversary week, we're sharing a selection of archival photos… 📸

Here (1951), Mary Almond and – possibly – J.S. Greenhow study radar echoes from meteors inside the Radiant Hut, which held instruments that measured the outputs from arrays of Yagi aerials.

EYES ON THE SKIES☄️

December brings one of the major meteor showers of the year: the #Geminids.

The Geminids are unusual because they don’t originate from a comet. Instead, they’re created by debris from the asteroid 3200 Phaethon, appearing to radiate from near the star Castor within Gemini.
