I admit I'm not familiar with Mass Effect. I just know the original ending of 3 pissed fans off 😄
Many people seem to be allergic to ambiguity and figurative devices. I've seen people criticize Cowboy Bebop because it's not as straightforward or formulaic as the shonen works that they're used to.
There are two important takeaways here:

1. Artists must be allowed the time and resources they need. Let them cook!

2. Media literacy has always been an issue, and even spoon-feeding the meaning to the audience isn't necessarily satisfying.
This post was inspired by a YouTube reviewer who thinks the first ending is "terrible and provides no closure". That's what set me off because I absolutely loved the ending. So many people can't handle ambiguity in stories.
