Theres soon to be a test on whether those who opine about screening actually understand the principles on which screening programmes are based

Comment from IES Chief Executive @naomiclayton.bsky.social on the just-announced Labour Market Statistics from the Office for National Statistics.
"There are early signs that the labour market is starting to stabilise, as the pace of decline in jobs is slowing. Payrolled employment increased in August, having decreased for the previous eight months. Job vacancies are increasing in some sectors but remain well below the pre-pandemic peak and the increase in unemployment means that there are more people looking for fewer jobs. With record-high numbers of people still out of work due to ill health and unemployment continuing to rise, it is vital that the government scales up support for individuals and employers to boost participation, alongside measures to boost demand."

Excited to start our clinic letter sprint today with patients, GPs, @uclh clinicians, techies and administrators. Letters have a massive role, safety critical, hugely expensive and time consuming. Major challenges outlined today, so looking forward to what we can do about it

Here's the relevant chart from the above report. It's rare to see such a clear, consistent slope in any social trend. That segregation is decreasing is perhaps the best evidence, least controversial social fact of modern Britain

This statistical fact is also obvious across so many domains: politicians, sport, economics, media, neighbours, partners, children

Does any adult in Britain (20, 40, 60 or 80) really think, has genuinely experienced, *less* interactions across ethnicity than they did as a child or younger afult?

I know statistics are poorly understood and are misused. But facts matter

Between the 1991, 2001, 2011 and 2021 Census *every* ethnic group in the UK has become *less* geographically segregated and *all* groups, majority and minorities, are more likely to interact with people not like them

Great column from @sarahoconnorft.ft.com where she casts her forensic eye over the introduction of collective bargaining in the social care sector. TL:DR it could work given adult care is a weird market largely paid for by local authorities; but as usual will there be enough cash? on.ft.com/4mSfeVm

This from @theifs.bsky.social explains the inequality in local govt funding &why reform is needed

If the total pot didn’t increase then yes, some councils will lose funds as it is reallocated to places that have been under-funded.

Growing the overall pot would help.

A new, up-to-date system for allocating funding between councils is vital, and reforms must align with the broader vision for local government.
