Lorica Segmentata from the Corbridge Hoard, Corbridge Roman Site Museum, Northumberland. #RomanFortThursday #Archaeology #Armour #RomanBritain #Corbridge #Photography
Heavily corroded Lorica Segmenta (armour popular in the Roman Army during the first few centuries of the Common Era) displayed on a metal support frame. The armour comprises several curved metal plates, protecting the left shoulder, chest, and midriff. The surface of each is rough and a rusty orange in colour; some greenish patches suggest the presence of copper or bronze in places. To the left of frame, a modern reconstruction completes the armour for the right side of the body, showing how it would have appeared when new, complete with leather straps holding the individual plates in position. The armour is thought to date to the reign of either Trajan or Hadrian.

Black and white photograph taken from the walls of Stirling Castle. The image is dominated by an attractively-roofed guard turret, just left of centre-frame, that protrudes from the top of a wall extending from the foreground in the lower-left of frame. In the distance, far below, and occupying the right-hand side of the image, a narrow river winds through a grassy and lightly wooded landscape. This is the River Forth, more-or-less where the Battle of Stirling Bridge was fought in 1297. The battle was a decisive victory for William Wallace against the forces of England's King Edward I under the command of John de Warenne, 6th Earl of Surrey. At the start of the battle, the castle was occupied by the English, but was recaptured by the Scots shortly thereafter. The defences shown in the image post-date these events by a few centuries.

Two house sparrows perch on the side of a wall. This is the western side of the Church of St Mary the Virgin on Holy Island, Northumberland (Lindisfarne) and is constructed of pale sandstone with rough mortar. The blocks visible here are pale pink and yellow in hue, with marked horizontal striations and signs of significant weathering. Toward the lower left of frame is an adult, viewed in profile but with head turned to face the viewer. It is identified by its larger size, its brown and black wing plumage, its grey underside, and its brown head with grey cap and black bib. Just right of centre, a juvenile stands side-on, looking to the right. It is identified by its smaller size, lack of bib, and pale stripe behind its one visible eye. Thanks to the RSPB website for identification notes!

Photograph of a stretch of wall, two or three metres in height, running from the right foreground to the left middle distance, with grass in front. A tree stands at the left of frame, on this side of the wall. In its closest section, the upper two thirds of the wall are of original roman construction, comprising rectangular purple stones of volcanic origin (Rougemont Trap) laid in regular courses. The lower section represents later underpinning (the ground level having been lowered) in a red coloured stone (Heavitree Stone) and is of a much rougher and more irregular construction. Further away, closer to the tree, the roman work has been replaced or patched with medieval masonry comprising a rather random assemblage of smaller stones.
