All it takes is:

-Pressure to “get the job done”

-Demonization of the target group (militants, communists, immigrants)

-A culture of impunity

That’s when torture and abuse become systemic and escalate.

As someone who studies political violence, here’s what scares me about the new Trump’s bill:

It’s not just the resources it gives to ICE which is already a human rights disaster.

It’s the signal it sends to ICE supervisors and agents.

From a pro-democracy perspective, Trump’s falling approval ratings are a good thing.

But today’s arrest of a Wisconsin judge is a stark reminder: declining popularity often brings rising repression.

Congrats to DR @michaelbecker.dev for successfully defending his dissertation! Huge thanks to his committee. TaLisa Carter, Gary LaFree, and @zeitzoff.bsky.social Off to big things for @ncite.bsky.social

Political Scientists don’t know much with certainty. I would argue one thing we do know is that concept of a “mandate” is muddled. What is Trump’s mandate? He has lots of policies. What was Biden’s? Who knows? We vote for lots of reasons, which may or may not all make sense or be coherent.
