No one can be left behind in the clean energy transition.

Especially not an entire continent.

Africa holds 60% of the world’s best solar resources and wants to increase renewables fivefold by 2030.

But the continent gets less than 2% of global clean energy investments.

This must change.

I am currently visiting SEI Latin America to exchange on lessons from South Africa's JETP, just transition planning, and to explore south-south cooperation on energy, as part of @trajects.bsky.social global climate centre. Join us at UNAL on Thursday at 930am for a Colombia-South Africa discussion!

I must apologise to Australia - I arrived this week from South Africa and now you also have coal plants falling over and loadshedding. If it is any consolation (it isn't), South Africa has been at stage 6 loadshedding (6GW, up to 12 hours per day without power) in the last few days
Current status of Victoria's coal fired power stations.

Yallourn: two of four units offline.
Loy Yang A: all four units currently offline.
Loy Yang B: Both units online.

These units are responsible for the majority of the state's power, and there's the possibility of big trouble this evening.

Rich fossil fuel exporters need to take the lead & show that fossil-free development is achievable. The numbers in this report are 🤯: exported emissions from Norway, Australia, Canada and the USA account for 11% of global emissions and projected extraction will chow 11% of remaining CO2 budget.

Greetings energy folks - I'm currently in Australia (various cities) for a few weeks and keen to meet and discuss energy with fellow nerds. Anything related to coal, just transition, and power system operations will make my heart beat faster. Let me know if you're around and keen to meet!

There can be no *new* oil and gas drilling if we want a safe, habitable world.

Yet, a tiny club of wealthy countries – 🇺🇸US, 🇨🇦Canada, 🇦🇺Australia, 🇳🇴Norway and 🇬🇧the UK – are responsible for *51% of all planned oil and gas field developments* from now to 2050.

That's the real hypocrisy ahead of #COP28

UK going big on climate inaction and inequity this week incl approving new oil and gas (UK is 5th for historical cumulative FF emissions and 8th incl land use see www.carbonbrief.org/analysis-whi...). Compromising climate action and grist to the mill of vested interests in other countries
Analysis: Which countries are historically responsible for climate change? - Carbon Brief
Carbon Brief looks at national responsibility for historical emissions of CO2 from 1850-2021, updating analysis published in 2019.
