Excited to share a new paper I co-wrote w/Gary Jaworksi in History of Social Science: Erving Goffman, Thomas Sebeok & Interaction Ethology. Based on new archival material, we show Goffman's ambition to meld interactionism & animal studies. cc @socscihistory.bsky.social muse.jhu.edu/pub/56/artic...

This is a great story about the last pigeon flyers of Baltimore
For decades, the pigeon men of Baltimore have trained their birds to compete in races. Now, they're fighting to keep the sport alive.
Baltimore’s Last Pigeon Men
A tradition steeped in history, the city’s pigeon-racing culture remains alive, if not quite thriving.

“The healthiest, tastiest way to eat is also the most compassionate and least polluting,”. RIP to legendary environmental and animal defender John Robbins (Diet for a New Planet”). An heir to Baskin Robbins, he rejected the family business to advocate for a plant-based diet.

It's a pleasant surprise to see @carlpope admit that he & other enviros downplayed methane emissions in 2010s. But a full mea culpa would mention that @sierraclub.org & other Big Greens vocally supported fracking & took petro $ for years after the Dimock catastrophe www.nytimes.com/2025/06/23/o...

🧵No words for how infuriated this mea culpa from Carl Pope (former CEO @sierraclub.org) makes me feel. We openly shared with SC data on methane leaks from fracking while SC was secretly accepting $millions from the gas industry.

Seriously fuck you. 1/7

This is devastating. Master thinker, ethnographer, humanist, and revolutionary
More awful news on an awful news day: UC-Berkeley sociologist and past ASA president Michael Burawoy was killed last night in a pedestrian vs. SUV driver hit-and-run.

My deepest condolences to his family, friends, students, & colleagues.

We domesticated, then discarded pigeons. Can we learn to love them again?
For most of human history, pigeons have been our pets and partners. But sometime in the last half-century, the relationship soured.

As @peter-singer.bsky.social writes in @nytimes.com & his @princetonupress.bsky.social book, let's use Thanksgiving to reflect on our contributions to unnecessary animal suffering. & for God's sake, dispense w/Presidential "pardoning" of the turkey, which is really an attempt to pardon our own guilt
For decades now, every Thanksgiving, U.S. Presidents have fallen for a cheap publicity ploy orchestrated by factory farm turkey producers.

I'm delighted that my OpEd: "What a Lame Duck President Could Do for Lame Turkeys" has appeared in the New York Times.
Opinion | President Biden Should End This Turkey Pardoning Nonsense
President Biden should cancel the Thanksgiving tradition of pardoning a turkey.
