I expect the U.K. version will have Civil War re-enactments and Anglo-Saxon feasting.

I have never been there but it sounds dodgy. I did once go to a battle of Hastings reenactment at which hordes of ‘Anglo-Saxons’ chanted ‘out out out’ while banging their shields, which was… interesting.

Le Puy du Fou, the French historical (re?)enactment entertainment park that is aiming to open a new branch near Oxford, has a somewhat divisive background in reactionary French politics. A very topical #frenchpodcast. #Frhistory www.radiofrance.fr/franceinter/...

Research on the wedding night in 19thC France took Aïcha Limbada to the Vatican archives to look at cases for divorce (other sources include publications by well-meaning doctors and... George Sand). #Frenchpodcast #Frhistory shows.acast.com/storiavoce/e...

This series of podcasts on ancient Gaza from @empirepoduk.bsky.social is astounding. Gaza is first mentioned in Egyptian written sources in the 15thC BC and 'Philistine' was bad press directed at Palestinians... podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/2...

I’m writing about Orientalism, so was very interested to see these examples of 18th century Occidentalism from the Qing dynasty in Taipei’s National Palace Museum.

Vasari invented art history with a specific agenda: to make the case that Florentine art was the best, with Michelangelo its greatest exemplar. Now I feel I have succumbed to propaganda. Interesting podcast from @sixteenthcgirl.bsky.social

This whole mini-series on the five partitions of the British Raj that gave shape to modern South Asia kept making my jaw drop. To start: not one partition but 5; oh, and 500+ monarchies being dissolved into republics overnight (eat your hat, Robespierre!).

Just a little plug to express my admiration for the Oxford Clarion. After years of being annoyed by the Oxford Mail, at last I realise that Oxford does have a local newspaper of the intelligence that it deserves.

On Henri IV, France's favourite king, who might not really have said that he wished every French family could have a chicken in the pot once a week, but who was admirably inclined to pragmatic compromise in the midst of the wars of religion. #Frenchpodcast #FrHistory www.youtube.com/watch?v=TKl8...

The Dreyfus Affair retold not as one conspiracy theory but a meeting of two or even three conspiracy theories. And the real traitor, the rather petty crim Esterhazy, ends up as a drinking companion for Oscar Wilde 😮.

NEW EPISODE OUT NOW!

Today David tells the tale of the Dreyfus Affair that split France down the middle and revealed the grip of a whole host of conspiracy theories. The story of a letter found in a wastebin turned into a saga about who really controlled the country.
