Writers are often motivated by external validation:
-bestseller status
-prestigious awards
-a certain $ in sales

But if you ONLY rely on these markers of "success," you’ll always be chasing something just out of reach.

A few thoughts on freeing yourself from the pressure. 🧵

That bloody spider's back again... Not sure if anyone remembers me going on about a spider being in my room... Well, that exact same spider has reappeared again... inside one of my slippers. Was about to put my foot in... and then it zoomed out of the slipper. That happened at 11pm... --

There are no qualifications you need to be a “real” writer.

You DON'T need:
❌ An MFA or writing degree
❌ To be a certain age
❌ Prior publications

You DO need:
✅ To write

Even the most accomplished authors experience imposter syndrome. But remember this:

Rejection isn't a failure, but a stepping stone.

Every successful author has faced rejection, often hundreds of times. But each “no” isn’t a dead end—it’s a step toward the right opportunity. 🧵

The hard truth: You can write an incredible book & still not land an agent. And even if you get an agent, your book can “die” on submission.

When so much of publishing is out of your control, how can you stay motivated?

Here’s what I tell authors who are facing setbacks: 🧵

So... this story that has a giant squid in it that may or may not have committed a crime has recently revealed to me that one of my characters is an abusive knob head.

Yikes...

Currently 1,100 words into my Adult Crime Fantasy story... I have a good feeling about this story. Not so sure about the current title that I've got for this story... but I can work on that when I've finished writing.

Oh boy... This Adult Crime Fantasy story is off to a depressing start. Main Character is verrry depressed...

About to start writing a story that I'm quite excited about... Not sure if it's going to be Young Adult or Adult... but I know that I want it to be a Crime Fantasy story. The main character is going to be in her forties. I'm not 40+ years old... but surely it's not that different to being 27? 👀😂🤷🏻‍♀️

Managed to accidentally buy a The Simpsons Season 12 dvd that's in Dutch/French (Amazon)... Hopefully I'll be able to navigate my way round the dvd. 😂😅🤞🏻 It says that there's an English option for audio and subtitles, so it's not all bad. I think... Haven't tested it out yet.

You and I are not the same. When you exit a small public restroom after stinking it up, you probably don’t have to worry about the person who has been waiting to use it next telling you “I’m a big fan!”

I don't know what to do... I know I'm going wrong somewhere, but I don't know what it is so I can fix the mistakes. Is my story actually a Middle Grade story instead of a Young Adult story? Is my cover letter not professional enough? Is my synopsis poorly put together?

The spider's made his/her second appearance. They crawled onto my mattress from what appeared to be under my bed, metaphorically stuck their tongue out at me and then disappeared again. Ugh...

Having an 'I'm not good at writing' moment... I'm sure I'll get over it at some point, but for now I'll wallow in self-pity.
