I have friends and family who are old enough to remember how bad things actually were before the current schedule of childhood vaccinations. It breaks my heart that we seem to need to relearn this bc it means death, disability, and grief that could otherwise have been prevented. #VaccinesSaveLives
Victoria - this view will never get old. Made new connections, rekindled old ones, and stuffed my head full of ideas at the Canada West Health Leaders Conference. Aaaaannnd - I'm glad to be home now in my comfy pants. #yyj #HealthLeadership
tl;dr - this is a pretty big moment for #AlzheimersDisease. That said, we have our work cut out for us to ensure that our health care system is ready and we can't lose sight of all the other things that are necessary to ensuring people affected by dementia can live well.
🧓 Not everyone will be eligible. We still need to invest in all those other things that are necessary to support people affected by #dementia: anti-stigma, risk-reduction/prevention, clear treatment pathways, good community-based supports, home care, long-term care, and palliative care.
⚖️ Equitable access needs to be at the forefront. Where you live or your level of personal resources shouldn't be the determining factor as to whether you can access this treatment.
🧪 You'll need to know your APOE4 status (you'll need genetic testing) to access this. APOE4 testing is limited in BC, so this is another bottleneck we'll need to overcome.

🏥 Monitoring via MRI is required to watch for side effects. We'll need to boost our MRI capacity to do this.
🩺 Early diagnosis is critical. Only people with mild cognitive impairment or mild hashtag#dementia due to Alzheimer's disease will be eligible for treatment. We don't do a good job of diagnosing Alzheimer's disease early enough right now, so we have our work cut out for us.
🧠 It's a treatment, not a cure. Clinical trials show that lecanemab slows the progression of Alzheimer's disease - it doesn't stop it.

✅ Approval doesn't mean available. Provinces and private insurers will need to decide whether (and for whom) they'll fund this treatment. That can take up to 2 yrs.
Health Canada has provided conditional approval to #lecanemab (brand name: Leqembi). This is a big deal, as it marks the first-ever disease-modifying treatment approved for use in Canada for #AlzheimersDisease. It's also important to understand the whole picture:
Omg...my childhood is calling! This brings back memories...
I drove out to Langley today and the sun coming over the fields as the fog was just lifting was absolute perfection. A beautiful autumnal morning.
I ate cold leftover pierogis and beans today because I could not muster the energy to microwave them. I should really know by now that getting covid boosted = one day out of commission and plan accordingly 🙈. (Still better than getting covid).
Understood - but from the article, it doesn't sound like the adapter was the critical failure point - it was the charging station.
The silver lining is that by their own data, offering vaccinations in schools works to boost coverage. Why not do a focused school-based campaign, then, to boost coverage - especially in those low-coverage areas?
I'm not convinced the Tesla was the problem. It sounds like the charging station itself failed in an unsafe manner and the driver just happened to have a Tesla. What makes you think it was the car that failed?
Yeesh. Guy got off lightly. I'm glad there is now a standard for third party adapters AND it sounds like the charging station itself failed in an unsafe manner, which should never happen.
Yikes. Glad no one was seriously injured.
I'm thankful for having a tableful of loved ones with which to share a meal this evening, and a warm dry home in which to welcome everyone.
A loooooong way out to the water - looking out over the tidal mud flats at Iona Regional Park, with stunning blue skies in the background and sand and driftwood in the foreground. #BlueSkyMonday
Fun times on a Friday night: my hairdryer broke, so we took it apart, figured out what melted (literally), cut the wires down, stripped a new section, popped on a new marrette, then managed to put it back together again. And! It works! (And no one was electrocuted). #RightToRepair
I don't understand. This could ⬇️ capacity in #LongTermCare when ppl are already waiting over 9 mo to be admitted AND when ~half of alternate level of care days are due to ppl living w #dementia being stuck in hospital bc there's nowhere to discharge them to. vancouver.citynews.ca/2025/09/24/l...
Long-term care operators hit hard by provincial funding stop
"We rely on overtime and agency staffing to fill the gap," said Mary Polak, CEO of BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA).
