Standardized testing rant:

Standardized means the same for all, even when it is not equitable or fair.

This means that a nonverbal child is not allowed to point to the letters they know.

If they can’t SAY the letters aloud they score zero on the test.

This is the worst timeline.

Herein lies the catch-22 of #BlackExcellence: when we don’t excel it’s because we’re lazy and untalented. When we do excel it’s because we exploited “Identity Politics”.
Why would a stranger who knows nothing about me assume I haven’t earned what I’ve achieved? 🤔

One of my grade 12 students told me that she’s a fan of this “old” animated series, Voltron…
She meant the 2016 reboot, not the 80s original.

Effective science communication is an underrated but vital skill, especially in modern times. Thank you, Bill Nye.

I’m looking for folks to follow on here: educators and those who are education adjacent. Journalists and politicians who care about public education. Scientists. Marginalized voices. People who left Twitter because it was too toxic. Or anyone who’s just into nerdy stuff.

I've never felt such a steep generational divide as I do teaching 9th graders right now. They wanted to record me saying "sixty-seven". (nope)
When I showed them part of BBC's "Life" (2009) a student asked if it was real or A.I. generated.

Scientific investigation. What factors affect the size of the balloon? Make a hypothesis, identify variables, and have at it!

Do people realize that other than the de-streaming of grade 9, the Ontario grades 9-12 science curriculum hasn't been updated in nearly 20 years? We're talking pre-iPhone, Pluto just recently demoted times. #OntEd

“There’s a periodic table on my desk! Can I touch it?!”
- one of my grade 9s

Grade 10 is the last time that many students take a science class, but grade 9 is the last time many of them are actually excited to be there. We need to keep that flame alive.
