Dink Johnson was a pianist, clarinetist and drummer, probably from New Orleans. He recorded with Kid Ory's Band in 1922 as a clarinetist. In the 1940s and 50s he recorded as a pianist. He passed away OTD in 1954.

1/ Bruce Turner was an English jazz saxophonist, clarinetist and bandleader. In the mid 1950s he briefly joined Humphrey Lyttelton’s trad band, but the more conservative fans told “dirty bopper” Turner, to “go home”.

Pianist John Colianni played with Lionel Hampton's big band, Les Paul, Anita O'Day and many others. From the mid 1980s on, he recorded under his own name. Colianni passed away OTD in 2023.

Jimmy Lytell was a clarinetist who started in the 1920s in various jazz bands (Original Indiana Five, Original Dixieland Band a.o). A decade later he worked as a session and orchestra musician. Lytell passed away OTD in 1972.

Frank Christian was a trumpeter and cornetist in the early New Orleans jazz scene. In the late 1910s he formed the Original New Orleans Jazz Band in NY, but soon returned south to play in various theater and dance bands. He passed away OTD in 1973.

Stanley Black was an English bandleader, composer, arranger and pianist. In the 1930s he worked with visiting artists Coleman Hawkins and Benny Carter. He became known for his scores for radio, television and cinema. Black passed away OTD in 2002.

1/ It’s difficult to imagine a Swing Jazz Era without Tommy Dorsey. He was a trombonist, composer, conductor and bandleader. After his break up with brother Jimmy, Tommy’s orchestra was incredibly successful from the 1930s way into the 1950s.

Frank Rosolino was a trombonist who played in Gene Krupa’s and Stan Kenton’s big bands. In the 1960s and 70s he worked with Frank Sinatra, Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett, Quincey Jones a.o. After a troubled life he passed tragically away in 1978 OTD.

Trombonist Floyd O'Brien started his career in the 1920s. He recorded with Fats Waller, Mezz Mezzrow, worked with Gene Krupa, Bob Crosby a.o. (NY), Jack Teagarden, Wingy Manone (LA) and Bud Freeman in Chicago. O’Brien passed away OTD in 1968.

Allan Botschinsky was a Danish trumpeter, composer and arranger. In the 1950s he played with touring musicians such as Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon, Lee Konitz a.o. He recorded extensively as bandleader and sideman. Botschinsky passed away OTD in 2020.

Clifford Thornton was a multi-instrumentalist, composer and arranger. He was known for his explorations in free and avant-garde jazz. He arranged for Horace Silver, McCoy Tyner and recorded with Sun Ra, Pharoah Sanders a.o. Thornton died OTD in 1989.

Robert Byrne was a bandleader, trombonist and music executive. He played with the Dorsey Brothers. In between starting two of his own big bands he flew aircraft in WWII. Byrne died OTD in 2006.

Eric(h) Vogel was a Czech trumpeter who organised a jazz school in the Brno Jewish ghetto. He was arrested, but escaped during the transport to Dachau. In 1946 he moved to the US where he died in 1980, date unknown.

Sten Hasselgård was a Swedish clarinetist in the US who started in the swing idiom. He shifted to bebop in the late 1940s, but died in a car accident OTD in 1948, only 26 years old.
