“Asclepius…” Michael’s voice is tinged with recognition. “That’s… You’ve been…? Who are you guys? Who’s ‘we’?”
“My friends and I. And my brother. We’re all supers too.” I take a step forward, moving closer to Michael, reality bending to bring us closer together. “We’re trying to take them both down. Where are you? Maybe you could help us.”
“Take them down how?” Michael stares at me, and the sunlight of his form would be burning my retinas if I had any, but I don’t, not here. “What’s your plan? Who are you working with?”
“No one,” I say. “It’s just the seven of us. We’re all kids…” And then my stomach lurches. “Wait, who are you working with? The DSR?”
Michael snorts disdainfully. “Absolutely not,” he says. “And I never would. Any super who works for them is a traitor to their own kind.”
It feels like the world is spinning beneath me, destabilizing what little I know, what little I understand. “Then… who…?”
“The Power League,” Michael answers, and the way he says it, with such pride and authority, makes something inside me lurch again. There’s so much going on, so much we don’t know about. “They’re the ones who rescued me from STRIKE. They’re freedom fighters. Supers who refuse to be used and controlled. They know better than to trust the government like everyone at that stupid school does.”
“School? There’s a…?”

God, I wish I still had Jack’s telepathy, I think, sprinting through dark hallways and around corners. I’m screwed like this, the floors are so big, I can’t find Alice without it—
Wait. Yes I can!
I skid to a stop and press my hand against a nearby wall to steady myself. Then I suck in a breath and tap into my potentikinesis.
I immediately feel two pings, both above me. Tommy’s crackling green electricity is further away, probably still in the server room on level twelve. Alice’s red and purple firework display is closer. Two floors up and getting closer, like she’s running across the level towards my side of the building.
“Stairs,” I hiss to myself, looking around for some. An EXIT sign points me in the right direction. Bingo.
I sprint over towards them, and then I slow to a stop, hearing heavy footsteps coming towards me from down below. Immediately, I duck behind a nearby corner—
And then my powers disappear.
“Shit,” I whisper. I was right, it is an anti-super squad. They’ve got a radial blocker on, and they’re headed right for Alice. She probably has no idea what’s coming.
Do they know about me too? Should I run? I think. The guards pound up the stairs, but… they don’t stop on my level. They keep going up, towards Alice. Not a single one enters the eighth floor.
I have to warn her, I think. I have to get to her.
