“You had years to plan that rescue, Alice,” I tell her. “Four years and special access through your parents and a stable source of food and warmth on top of it. We don’t have any of that anymore. We have to focus on surviving right now.”
“That’s all we’ve been doing since we ran away, though!” Tommy said. “I’m tired of just surviving, Pen! I want to take them down!”
“Well, tough shit!”
“Pen,” Jack says quietly, and the three of us immediately fall silent at the solemn tone of his voice. When I meet his gaze, his eyes are sad but determined, with a serious steadiness that’s as hard as steel.
“They’re right,” he says. “We can’t run. Asclepius and STRIKE will chase us forever, and I’m not letting my baby sister grow up hunted and scared. You and Tommy weren’t being chased by anyone but the cops before this. It was different. But now we’ve got my uncle and his entire company on our heels, and if we don’t turn around and fight back, we may never have another shot at taking them down.”
My stomach twists in anger and panic as I realize I’m on the losing side of this argument. I feel my hands begin to shake, and I curl them into fists to hide it.
“You don’t know what that’s going to take,” I say, and there’s a tremor in my voice I can’t hide. Angry tears begin to prickle in my eyes. “You have no idea what we’ll have to do, Jack. You have no clue.”
“And you do?”

“Pen!”
Tommy’s voice fills me with so much relief I stumble and nearly fall on my face onto the concrete. He doesn’t help by running up and slamming into me with a hug that actually does knock me on my ass. Still, I hug him back. Tightly.
“No one followed you?” I ask. He shakes his head. You can’t ever be sure, but Tommy and I have gotten pretty good at noticing when we’re being followed. Most people aren’t very subtle about it. “Tommy, the video—”
“It got uploaded,” he says, eyes wide and frightened, and my stomach drops down so far it might as well be in the East River. “Not the last bit where I used my powers, but—Oh god, Pen, what if, what if STRIKE finds us, what if—”
“They won’t,” I say firmly, and though my heart is racing and every inch of me feels like it’s frozen and on fire at the same time, I keep my head on. I always keep my head on. “We’ll leave tonight, okay? We’ll go somewhere else. Chicago, maybe, or San Francisco. I don’t know.”
“But, but mom said—”

“I just…” Alice sighs, finally blinking the tears out of her eyes. They drip down her cheeks as she stares up at the dark ceiling. “I thought I could handle this. I was so stupid to think I could handle this. I’m not a badass action figure superhero. I’m a spoiled rich girl with martial arts training and a genius IQ and parents that aren’t terrible enough for me to actually hate. Or, not terrible enough to me, at least. They’re plenty terrible to other kids, but not me. Never me.”
I let that all sink in, my heart aching.
And then I say, dumbly, “You’re not stupid. And you seem pretty badass to me, dude.”
Alice shrugs. “A superpower does not a superhero make.”
“No, it doesn’t,” I agree. “You know what does? Helping people who can’t help themselves. Saving little kids from evil labs. Using all that spoiled rich girl martial arts training genius IQ evil scientist parent bullshit to help others. And that’s what you do. That’s what you did. That’s what you’ve done every second since I’ve known you. And probably what you’ve done every second of every day that you were able to. Am I wrong?”
Her mouth twists into a conflicted, stubborn shape, obviously trying not to believe me, but the furrow in her brows and the look in her eyes tells me she’s starting to.
