You scared the hell out of me.” She cupped her face, forcing eye contact. “Tell me what you saw. Please.” Mayah’s head shook weakly, tears streaking down her temples. “Celeste. she…I—-I can’t.” Cassidy’s fear hardened into steel. “you’re not just seeing her anymore. You’re inside her. If you don’t tell Brent—-“ “I can’t,” Mayah rasped, recoiling. “He’ll look at me like my mother. Broken.” “Then let him be wrong.” Cassidy’s tone sharpened, fierce and pleading all at once. “I would rather he doubted you than bury you. That’s efficiency.” She huffed a quiet laugh. “I’m really not good at normal introductions.” “Yeah, I noticed.” He leaned back, studying her. “You look different from what I expected.” “Different how?” “I don’t know. Less…haunted-house, more library-at-midnight.” She blinked. “Is that a compliment?” “Working on it.” Another silence, this one gentler. He stirred his coffee, though he hadn’t added sugar. She traced the rim of hers with one gloved finger. Finally, she asked, “Why are you doing this?” He shrugged. “What, coffee?” “Being nice.” He met her gaze then, grin fading. “Because I’ve seen what happens when people aren’t.” Her chest tightened. “You think i’m broken.” “No,” he said quietly. “I think you’ve been through hell, and you’re still here. That’s not broken.”
