During Gion Matsuri, the city of Kyoto itself transforms. Food stalls pop up everywhere, and the tradition of Byobu Matsuri, where local homes show precious heirlooms to the public, turns the streets into a museum.

Gion Matsuri spans the entire month of July.

Notable events include Kippu-iri (by July 5), Yoiyama evenings (July 14–16 for the first and 21–23 for the second) with illuminated floats and lively street food, preluding the climactic float parades: Saki Matsuri (July 17) and Ato Matsuri (July 24).
The Gion Festival started as a ritual of purification.

When a devastating plague occurred in 869, the emperor ordered a purification ritual at Yasaka Shrine, with 66 halberds representing the provinces.

The aim was to appease the gods and drive away disease.

As July nears its end, the Gion Festival in Kyoto will feature the grand second procession of floats on July 24th.

Lavishly decorated floats travel through downtown Kyoto, and visitors gather as the floats make dramatic turns (tsujimawashi).
