“I object to seeing brown people on my street but I will give up this view if graduate requirements are shortened from two years to 18 months” give me a fucking break.

It is extremely unclear what the fuck you're talking about

"a test"? you mean...a violation?
AP: Israel plans to halve aid into Gaza over slow return of dead hostages, a test for the Gaza ceasefire

If anyone is wondering about the penetration of bad AI art, this is in the toilet of a hole in the wall Thai place where you have to go through the kitchen to reach it
janhopis.bsky.social
Oh yeah that definitely happens a lot, it's a bit cheap to add the setting/character names and call it an adaptation. My point is more than unfaithful adaptations aren't defacto bad. You have to just judge the thing as it is.
janhopis.bsky.social
The problem with that is that it was bad, not unfaithful. Don't mind a weird aesthetic steampunk Pratchett per se

Jay Rayner, wanker though he is, is one of the few food writers who manages to find new ways to describe having dinner and retain his own voice. Always enjoyed his reviews.

I would have loved it if anyone I went to university with appeared - even performatively - to like books
janhopis.bsky.social
Here's another one: in terms of difficulty in producing something novel and interesting, both food and music writing are far more difficult than fiction. Fiction is hard for reasons more related to the form than the prose. Poetry is the exception (good poetry is the hardest literature of all).

lmao, I mean I was going to allude to the pederasty but I did wonder whether there were any prevailing "gay with Socrates" theories (though I am am more compelled by "Socrates didn't exist").

Out of interest which camp are we placing Plato in here, I suppose "white" isn't particularly meaningful in Athenian terms.
janhopis.bsky.social
Not going to fully bite (maybe a nibble) but it's definitely a completely different texture to the book and benefits greatly from it

This truly is the inflection point where millennials are turning into their parents
janhopis.bsky.social
Like I say, you're welcome to think that, I shan't be arguing about it.
janhopis.bsky.social
Because (to head off the other usual response) I have no interest in whether other people use it or not, I truly don't care, and I think major AI firms are materially making the world a worse place, but denying that the technology has value is going to sound increasingly flat earth I'm afraid.
janhopis.bsky.social
Because the technology is useful, obviously. But can I just say in advance that I know the exact shape this argument is going to take now and I've vowed to stop having it, you're welcome to think it's completely without merit and all the people using it are foolish, ignorant or dupes.
janhopis.bsky.social
I'm not arguing we should do that or that it's a good thing, I don't think we should be entertaining OpenAI, Anthropic, Musk etc whatsoever. They're liars and hucksters. But they didn't invent the technology which will persist and continue to be used, yes, absolutely.
janhopis.bsky.social
the financial bubble falling doesn't mean that every server stack falls into the sea or every tech/LLM company ceases to exist either though. we still have the internet after the dot com crash (though the scale here is larger).
janhopis.bsky.social
to be fair I wonder how much of that is because the original just isn't very good, so it's ripe to be elevated by a good adaptation. maybe something like The Godfather as well, takes a very trashy pulp novel and turns it into something much more stately
janhopis.bsky.social
well the world is full of sober, tech-savvy professionals making intelligence use of LLMs as tools, so presumably they'll keep doing it, whether it's Claude or DeepSeek or an open source model we don't know about yet.
janhopis.bsky.social
they're linked but not to the extent that if the financial bubble falls, the technology will. the technology is now extant. there are open source LLMs popping up all over. you can't uninvent something.
janhopis.bsky.social
yes but that's not what I mean
janhopis.bsky.social
people conflate the bubble (a financial phenomenon) with the technology (which will absolutely persist after OpenAI go bust, if they do). maybe the financial prediction is correct but the technological one is very foolish.
janhopis.bsky.social
wouldn't have thought so. some of the best ones completely subvert the spirit of the original!
