BLOG: People and drug smuggling obey the same incentives. Governments have failed to stop both, because they have not developed the skills to sell obvious solutions to voters. This pathetic state of affairs is nowhere more clear than in these two areas of policy.

The key point - when you sail so close to the wind - is that everything boils down to these tiny details and fine margins. Pathetically bad fiscal management, not just by this govt but by every govt since Brexit. Has Brexit ushered in not just worse economy but also far worse govt officials?

This OBR/Treasury row on who said what, when... is very muddy and complicated.

A few points:
• idea that the OBR said on Oct 31 Reeves was already meeting her target by £4b isn't really the full picture - fcast excluded the welfare u-turns since March (some media have pointed that out, others not)

There's a building wave of public opinion in the UK against allowing Russian interference in our democracy to continue unabated.
That means RefUK is in BIG trouble - look at the data on Wales.
Trump's support in the US is collapsing too - for the same reason.

When I still trod the boards, we put on 'Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead' at the Phoenix Players in Nairobi, Kenya. Tom Stoppard was a genius and I never enjoyed a play as much as I enjoyed that one. Here I am as King Hamlet, having poison poured into my ear by my own brother, Claudius.

1700 Israelis killed. More than 70,000 Palestinians murdered. That makes it more than 40 Palestinians killed for every Israeli. And Israel is not stopping. It's aim: the wipe out the entire Palestinian population and take over Gaza. Israel wants Lebensraum, just like Hitler did. It's the same thing.

It is only a question of time before Stephen Miller declares African-Americans illegal immigrants and puts forward a proposals for the Final Solution and starts building extermination camps. If I was an ethnic minority in the US, I would not wait and see. Act now or regret.
Stephen Miller is now arguing that assimilation is fundamentally impossible and that certain cultures are not compatible with Western civilization

Fewer workers. Fewer international students. More people leaving.

A "step in the right direction" according to the PM.

Impossible to take PM/govt seriously on growth if they are deliberately reducing it (and making the fiscal position worse) *as a matter of policy*.

1/3. THE UK BUDGET IN A NUTSHELL:
The big fiscal hole clearly needed filling following Brexit & the irresponsibility of past governments. So taxes had to go up. The fiscal gap will now get smaller and government finances will improve a bit, BUT growth will suffer and we may end up in recession.
