One of the wickedest things Wes Streeting has ever done is push politically convenient falsehoods about suicide rates amongst young trans people. We have new data from the National Child Mortality Database that exposes the truth he tried to cover up.

The spread of these numbers is vastly significant.

Appleby's report was held up by Wes Streeting at the despatch box to defend the safety of his ban on puberty blockers.

This spike in suicides following Tavistock's shuttering raises huge questions for Streeting.

The new data out today shows there was a fourfold increase, from 5 in 2019-20, 4 in 2020-21:

To 22 in 2021-22, the year Tavistock was shuttered

We only have this data thanks to a series of FOIs, and press requests - not because officials have taken action.

bsky.app/profile/wear...
Significantly, after the Tavistock closed following the Keira Bell case in 2022, this year sees the greatest number of suicides – which aligns with what whistleblowers said.

The data raises significant questions about the Appleby report, which said no surge happened.

bsky.app/profile/good...
Five trans children died by suicide in 2019-20, 4 in 2020-21 then 22 in 2021-22. This is the truth, from official Government data, that Wes Streeting desperately tried to cover up.
February 7, 2026 at 12:05 PM
What we argued in 2024 was the very point made by the whistleblowers: these numbers were seemingly obfuscated, making it more difficult to report on this issue.

Now, two years on, thanks to vast research, we are closer to understanding the true picture.

Reading the Appleby report in 2024, it was clear how subjective and opinionated it was.

To rebuke what @goodlawproject.org and @wearequeeraf.com were reporting it said that the data wasn't concrete enough - but, that didn't capture the nuance of our journalism.

I've always been clear about the huge irony in a government report calling the media like @wearequeeraf.com irresponsible for reporting on trans suicides, in case it harms young people's wellbeing.

Politicians, healthcare systems and media perpetuating hate, are the driving forces 🧡
A government report rebuked @wearequeeraf.com for reporting on whistleblowers who said there had been a spike in suicides after the Tavistock shuttered

These numbers from @goodlawproject.org show our reporting was justified, and critical

What have we learned? 🧡

Important new data uncovered by @ludovicparsons.bsky.social & @wearequeeraf.com

107 of 647 children who died by suicide in England were LGBTQ+ in 2019-2025. 46 of those were trans - this is disproportionate

I spoke to Ludovic about how action needs to be taken⬇️

All eyes are now on the judicial review, brought by the @goodlawproject.bsky.social, on the EHRC's hasty actions in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling

It's striking to me that this shift is happening before that significant ruling πŸ‘‡
πŸ†• Reports say, Equality watchdog the EHRC's code of practice is being "adapted" to:

πŸ‘‰ Lessen its impact on business
πŸ‘‰ Balance single-sex spaces with lives of Trans+ people

This comes ahead of a critical ruling about the watchdog's actions, under it's previous chair.

This is what we know 🧡
