Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story follows a woman suffering from depression and treated patronizingly by her doctor husband, who insists on “the rest cure”—no exertion at all. In a house with hideous, entrancing wallpaper, her condition worsens as the pattern fuels her delusions. #booksky

Dostoevsky dark tale explores Raskolnikov testing the belief that only the “extraordinary” may break the law for a greater good. His growing guilt slowly consumes him, turning torment into confession and punishment, and hinting at redemption. #booksky #52booksgalore #books4life

Toni Morrison's prose is masterful as she spins a tale of discovery. The journey to what it means to be a man, how it affects the trajectory of your life, who it touches. "Song of Solomon" is a journey of where one comes from, who you are, & where you are going. Read, cherish, & savor it! #Booksky

"'...Help us make America great again.'" Octavia E. Butler was prescient in her observations. We are living in the days of fanaticism & ostracism of people who look different, think different, & have a different culture than the one proposed & forced by the saviour-complex followers.

"The Old Man And The Sea"- E. Hemingway. It's about the struggles in life & dealing with them with dignity. The old man reminisces on how he used to be & how that doesn't serve him now, but he should face his struggle head on, i.e. the sea & the fish. And if so accept defeat. And much more. #Booksky

Written in crude yet elegant prose, Jan Wolkers does the Dutch language justice by telling a story from lust to love to heartbreak, encapsuled in reminiscence and describing it in detail and not forgetting the narrative that drives a novel. All the while doing the Dutch language justice. #booksky

Parable of the Sower - Octavia E. Butler. When the world has lost it's way and civilization has crumbled, do we turn into animals? Devouring eachother? or do we strive, with hope based on "good ground" to plant the seed for a new and better society? A vision of things to come? #booksky #bookstagram

"The autobiography of Malcolm X" - as told to Alex Haley. Malcolm X,"a Man", for whom change was inevitable. His life is an inspiration for seekers, for critical thinkers, for lovers of truth, justice, and principles. Forget what you think you know about Malcolm X, and read this book today. #Booksky

What does it mean to live by one's own rules, not beholden to society's norms? Sula is the exploration of this, for a black woman, in a time when it meant having kids, getting a man, suppressing your own needs/desires - an exposing & disrupting spirit serving to distract from one's life. #booksky

Capitalism and Slavery - Eric Williams. This books highlights the relationship between capitalism & the Transatlantic Slave Trade and the enslavement of Africans fueled the rise of "western" society. This I feel is in direct conversation with "Born in Blackness". Definitely needs a reread! #booksky

1984 - George Orwell. An apt book to reread as we are living in a Renaissance, or rather a continuation of totalitarianism, mass surveillance, and repressive regimentation of people and behaviours within society. In a time when censorship & propaganda is rampant, rereading becomes important #booksky

The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison is about colorism, class, prejudices, self-esteem, the unspoken secret, the ugly, the intertwined lives, sexual violence and the horrible effects of white-supremacy. Toni Morrison is masterful in her prose. I love it! The first of her amazing works! #booksky

Alhassan Susso's ("Las" - his nickname) story of an immigrants' life, dealing with eyesight struggles, not forgetting where you came from, looking forward, and being a teacher, sprinkled with motivational quotes.

Howard W. French has given us a true in-depth research and the interweaving of precise historical detail at the contributions of Africans to the making of the modern world. This requires a read & reread many times to a part of history that is often hidden, left out or purposely obscured. #booksky

One of my new favorite novels. It reminds me of the stories my parents told us - talking about how they grew up and the tales they were told by their elders, who wanted their kids to behave. Fantastical & cautionary it takes you through 100 years of one family's journey. Gabo outdid himself!

@africanacarr.bsky.social Can you please help me? I have been trying to get "The United-Independent Compensatory Code/System/Concept Textbook: A Compensatory Counter-Racist Code" - Neely Fuller for almost two months. Is it out of print? Do you possibly know where I can get it?

Rilke writes to Mr. Kappus (lithub.com/who-exactly-...) about subjects such as solitude, sadness, doubt, patience, and inner work, and more.

... "in the face of all resistance" you will be transformed. We must let it be a teacher, to let us flourish into a better person.
"Patience is all!".

What does it mean to be a black person living in this world that seeks to annihilate your body, that seeks to diminish who you are, what you contribute, that seeks to keep you in your "place"? Ta-Nehisi Coates talks to all of us in "Between the World and Me". Read, discuss, and share.

Read. Read. Read. Read. Then read some more. And re-read your favourites. And back again we go to try something new, but just read. You don't need to be fast, or read hundreds of books a year. Just do what you can and find what you like obviously, but try it all. And audiobooks obviously count
