The King Stone (oil on canvas 30cm x 30 cm) - part of the Rollright Stones complex in Oxfordshire, for #StandingStoneSunday .At midsummer, unruly youths would partake of cakes and ale, and watch fairies dance around the stone at the dead of night.

The autumnal equinox is one of the melancholic corners of the year - the summer’s over, the nights are getting longer, and the beer’s getting darker - and there’s sense of time slipping away. Castlerigg Stone Circle in the Lake District, photographed using a 1953 Elioflex camera. The site probably served a religious and social function - a high place to be nearer to the old gods perhaps, and also close to a neolithic axe factory.
