Never seen Dial of Destiny but it blows my mind that it's supposed to be worse than Kingdom of the f*cking Crystal Skull. ๐Ÿ˜ฆ Still a cool series rewatch though!
You don't have to, the story and gameplay are 100% enjoyable without having played Hades 1. Just know that there will be spoilers about some Hades 1 characters in Hades 2, so you'll lose out on a few surprises and suspense element if you ever decide to check out the first game. But no worries.
That's cool to hear! I usually hate roguelikes too, because losing all your progress over and over is so unsatisfying. But with Hades 1 and 2 I always looked forward to dying in a run because it meant the story would progress!
(11/11) ... in a way that makes me genuinely believe that these characters are the embodiment of strife and retribution, love that they cast Amelia Tyler - the narrator in Baldurโ€™s Gate 3 - as the voice of Hecate, love the animal familiars and would by plushies of all of them. Thanks!
(10/11) ... love the ending to Arachneโ€™s and Odysseusโ€™ stories which make sense for their respective characters and Greek tragedies as a whole, love how Scylla sings her own boss music, love how Eris and Nemesis are written ...
(9/11) To end it on a positive note: All of the new characters are awesome. Love how snide Hera is, love it when Apollo calls me Sunshine, love how different Hephaestusโ€™ boons play, love the new mechanic with Seleneโ€™s Hex, could listen to Moros complain about his sisters the Fates all day, ...
(8/11) But half an hour of a weak-ish ending doesnโ€™t ruin dozens of hours I genuinely loved and enjoyed for me, at least not in this game. So itโ€™s all fine. I could gush about the game more and maybe will later, but for now thatโ€™s it. Until the first patch is released, at least.
(7/11) The one thing I really didnโ€™t enjoy was the main storyโ€™s ending, which in my mind didnโ€™t fit the tone and build-up at all. But apparently theyโ€™re adding more content to the ending in the upcoming first patch, so I guess they got that feedback a lot.
(6/11) Melinoe as the main character felt appropriately different from Zagreus as the protagonist, but not in a way I found jarring or arbitrary. While I love Zag more, Mel makes total sense for the game and story sheโ€™s in, which is much, much darker than the first gameโ€™s.
(5/11) The writing sometimes made me forget that all the characters are only still images (with some animated particles for flavor), because the writing and acting was so crisp that they felt, again, very unique, three-dimensional and animated from the get-go.
(4/11) Iโ€™m happy I could set the right challenge level for me! Full disclosure, my fingers are too slow to beat this game on standard mode, so I activated God Mode pretty early on and ended up beating it with maximum (80%) reduced damage. And I still died a lot. Judge me, I donโ€™t care.
(3/11) ... sky-high QoL features, top notch dialog writing and voice acting, expertly done character design, and an interesting interpretation of Greek mythology. Even after dozens of hours I didnโ€™t get tired of starting another run through the โ€œsameโ€ dungeon.
(2/11) Supergiant Games basically kept all the parts that I already loved about the first game and wanted more of: Smooth gameplay, satisfying combat, that genuine feeling of progress that can make roguelikes incredibly frustrating if itโ€™s missing, ...
โ–ซ๏ธGAME 18 of 2025 DONE: Hades IIโ–ซ๏ธ

I vowed to play at least 1 game in 2025 that actually came out this year. The dice fell on Hades II because I was (amโ€ฆ) obsessed with the first one. One month and 100 hours later, Iโ€™m done and incredibly happy with my decision!

Spoiler-free final thoughts:
๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿงต(1/11)
1 in 5 still doesn't sound "unlikely" to me, don't know what they're on about ๐Ÿซค
Hades II - 100% achievements in the bag! ๐Ÿฅณ Pretty much exactly 100 hours on the dot and 1 month since starting too. That was so fun!

I may or may not finish the non-achievement content in the game soon, but most likely I'll wait for patch 1 to be released to see the new reworked ending and dialogs.
That just hit me like a knife into my heart, can't imagine how intense that must be for you. ๐Ÿซ‚
The only good thing about being up early ๐Ÿ˜ญ
Not a huge fan of the strict "facts vs. feelings" separation because it always makes BOTH look like extreme psychopaths for different reasons.

But the result checks out: if we're friends and you're late I will cry. ๐Ÿ‘€
