A warm welcome to the Republic of #Malta — the 152nd member of the IPBES family!
Together, we continue strengthening the science-policy interface for biodiversity and ecosystem services. 🌿🌍

Looking forward to collaborating at #IPBES12 and into the future! #ForNature 🧪🏡
Graphic with an orange background showing "THE REPUBLIC OF MALTA" in large white text at the top. Below is the text "Welcome to" and the white IPBES logo on the left. On the right side is a simplified map outline of Malta in white and red, reflecting the colors of the Maltese flag. The map shows Malta's distinctive archipelago shape with its main islands. The design is minimal and clean with high contrast between the orange background and white elements.

All three oceanic devil rays are now Critically Endangered, according to the IUCN Red List, including spinetail devil rays like this.

We will be advocating for them at the upcoming #CITESCoP20. Devil rays are among the group of sharks and rays up for stronger protections.

So sad that a marine cone snail (Conus lugubris) has just been declared Extinct on the #IUCNRedList. Being predatory and venomous was not enough to save it. Degradation of its Cabo Verde habitats was the main problem. www.iucnredlist.org/search?query...

The guiña, a small wildcat, has been moved to least concern on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Found only in Chile and Argentina, this small cat was previously listed as vulnerable.

But the threat downgrade isn’t a sign of conservation success, researchers say.
IUCN downgrades guiña threat status, prompting conservation warning

The new European Butterfly Red List is published today, with worrying findings. Over 1/4 (28%) of Europe’s 442 species are threatened with extinction or are close to being so. The situation is far worse for our 148 endemic species, 40% are now threatened or nearly so www.bc-europe.eu/webpage.php?...

The IUCN calls the extinction crisis a mix of “hope and concern.” But hope thrives in the absence of honesty. Humanity would rather lie to itself about endless growth than face the limits of a finite planet.

The new European Butterfly Red List found that the biggest threats to butterflies continue to be habitat loss and degradation but climate warming is having a devastating effect on sp. in the far north and far south of Europe. 52% (34) of all Red List sp. are now threatened by climate warming.

The IUCN has declared the Christmas Island shrew extinct.

We urgently need the political will to fix Australia's reputation as a global leader in mammal extinctions, starting with nature laws that address the threats of habitat destruction and climate change.

Australia’s only shrew has been declared extinct. Australia leads the world in mammal extinctions and ranks second for loss of biodiversity. We need better funding for conservation action and stronger environmental laws to uphold our international commitments to prevent further extinctions 🧪
